Gamewise, the GF 6800 Ultra eats the 9800 XT alive; double the performance in modern games. Of course, ATI's X800XT also eats the 9800 XT alive and even does some tasty nibbling on the 6800 Ultra, but I don't see it available for Mac, so it's a moot point.
Anyway, the 6800's a monster of a graphics board.

I thought the 9800 XT was a bit more powerful than the 6800, at least in the PC world. Anyone have some numbers?

Oooh, ooh, so this is the X800 competition. I was thinking it was the 5850 and 5800. Whoops.
Well then—here's hoping for the X800 sometime soon.

That Nvidia card looks impressive but, I think I'll stay with my Radeon 9800XT for now. I can upgrade a year later to whatever comes out in another 6-8 months.

Nvidia cards give much better performance with OpenGL than Radeons. You'd be better of with the 6800.

well get this, you are right apparently, I just got off the phoen with the apple store..
they had "failed" to cancel my other order (2.5 with 9600) so I asked them the same thing you did (upgrade to 6800), and had them cancel my new order.. my shipping date stayed 7/30...she says there is not a hold up on the new card, they just have a huge backup
the thing that really threw me off was the fact that I did a coniguration with a dual 2.0 and is still said august...
oh well we will see, as of now I am happy lol, hope I stay that way

You'll definiteley loose your queue position becasue the dual 2.5 G5's will be shipping before the GeForce 6800 Ultra part is available from Apple. I switched up from 9800XT to the GeForce 6800 Ultra two days ago.

I called to change my order, but did not get the good ship date! They kept my order number the same, but changing to the 6800 pushed my ship date back a month. After reading some posts here of a 7/30 ship date, I was bummed and called back. They reaffirmed what they had told me before: The 6800 cards won't be ready to go until August, which seems to mean that your 7/30 ship dates can't be right. Which leads me to 2 possibilities:
1. You guys are pulling our legs with that 7/30 ship date. As that would be mean of you, I doubt that is the case. (MacNN posters aren't mean, are they??)
2. Somehow the Apple ship date updater hasn't caught up with you yet, and your ship date will probably change. This happened with the 2.0 orders a LOT last year, right? So, you might want to take that 7/30 ship date with a whole shaker of salt.
On the other hand, I do hope yours ships 7/30, even though I will be crying if mine doesn't. Oh, one more thing -- my order number is still the SAME as my original order placed immediately when they announced the new PMG5s, so it is not that my order was cancelled. They said I still have my "place in line", but that the August 30 ship date I have is reflective of when the 6800 will be ready to go. Well, if that helps anyone, then good. If it bums you out, then sorry!

After reading of all your 7/30 ship dates and how you were assured a 7/30/04 ship date even with the Ultra 6800, I called apple a 3rd time to ask about my 8/30 ship date. I got the same answer:
1. They are not expecting the 6800 card until August.
2. To have a 7/30 ship date with the 6800 then they would have to get the card as soon as 7/15/04 to build them.
3. They are not expecting the card in the next 2 weeks (in order for that to happen).
4. Therefore my 8/30 ship date seems to the order center as most in line with the facts of component schedules and assembly.
5. They even speculated that your orders showing 7/30 had not yet been "updated" (that's the word he used) and that when they were the ship date would change.
Uggh! Since I am the only one to not have a 7/30 ship date then you guys are most likely the ones who will fare better with this. On the other hand, the card was said to be ready in August, which would mean a ship date of "on or before 8/30" which means mine is most likely to be true. Well, we shall just have to wait and see on this. I hope my order didn't get messed up so that I am the only early orderer whose order got unnecessarily delayed, but I also hope your order goes out 7/30!

In that case...i hope I can laugh at you when I'm on my new powermac with a nvideia 6800 ultra...before 7/30!

When I placed my original order, I forgot to click the option to send everything together, instead of as they become available. Now that the computer won't ship until some indefinite time hopefully in August, I'd like to change the shipping address and the shipping speed.
Unfortunately, the printer already shipped because I mistakenly chose for things to be shipped as they become available... Now Apple won't let me change the shipping address or the shipping speed, which sucks. I don't really understand that limitation - why can't they just change the shipping iinformation for that part of the order, and just bill me extra for it? It'd make me a lot happier with the purchase (the later it arrives the more inconvenient it will be) and I don't see how it could be so inconvenient or difficult for Apple. Is there any way I could coerce Apple to change that information without placing an entirely new order? I won't replace the order because I don't want to lose my queue position and if I do then I don't get the mail in rebate for my printer (which gives me the printer for free).
Any hope? Or should I just give in and hope that it gets here at a convenient time?

have faith. i chose the exact same option as you.... all i did was email them and they changed it....it shouldn't be a problem (they shipped my printer a few weeks ago)

I often see lots of people wanting their computer stuff shipped overnight. I was a shipping manager for a company that shipped and received lots of kinds of things and in high volume. So I've had a lot of experience with shipping. One of the studies that I remember on shipping compared the various big package shippers in terms of efficiency and in terms of condition of delivered packages. For fragile things, which in my opinion includes computers, it was stated that regular, "ground" delivery was the safest for your package. In other words, the faster the packaged delivered, the worse the package was handled. That's really common sense when you think about it. One of the safest ways of sending something -- despite all the usual jokes about them -- is through the US Postal Service. Yes, they can be maddening and incompetent, but let's face it -- with regular delivery they aren't busting their butts to deliver your package! It's likely to be handled less roughly. Also, ground service with UPS at least a few years ago used to have a high rate of good package condition upon delivery. So, here's my question to you guys: You wait 2 months for a Power Mac...Wouldn't you want it to take a couple of more days and be treated better than having 'your precious' (reference Golem) thrown around in a 'Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!' fashion? I sure would!!! After reading that study several years ago, I have always, always chosen the cheapest shipping option, knowing that it will be slowest and have a better CHANCE to be handled decently. This is not always the case, which is why I put "chance" in all caps. Bottom line: Faster delivery brings significantly higher risks of rough treatment. My advice is obviously, chill out and wait just a couple of days longer.

Except for me, chilling out and waiting for the slowest shipping really might be the worst idea. You see, I'm going to college around that time, and in a different state than where I live right now. As of now, my order is to have it shipped regular ground shipping to my parents' house, but by the time it gets here with that shipping speed chances are that I won't be here, and my parents will then have to ship it over to me... Not convenient at all and also brings several other problems into the equation.
My two solutions are to either change the shipping speed to the fastest, let it suffer through rough handling, and possibly get here before I leave (which is my greatest hope because it would solve the most problems), or to change the shipping address to my sister's house, which is in the same city as my college. So either way I have to change something, and also the quicker I get it the better, for reasons I don't feel like explaining right now...
But thanks for the hint - I'm going to try emailing apple and asking them to change the order. It's weird that they would do it by email, but not by phone :-\.

One thing we keep forgetting is that they state... "on or BEFORE Aug 31" That tell me many of us may get an early surprize at our doors... Before could be weeks before , or just a day or two ......... Who knows?

Well, I was just saying that overnight has higher odds that it will be treated rougher. You might actually end up having it treated better with overnight than slower shipping -- Nobody knows. If all things were equal and your sister's is a good place to have packages sent to, then I would probably do that if I were you. One less thing for you to transport to another city, and you can ship it any way you like there. The only reason I said all that about overnight VS ground/slow shipping is that I think a lot of people don't know or think about it. I also used to work for a major package shipper and the abuse some packages took just to stay on schedule was utterly amazing and sad. Sometimes I just had to laugh because it was so ridiculous, and I could do nothing to stop it. To those of you who have no choice and must choose overnight, that's the best you can do and if it is messed up then Apple will send you another.

Silly question maybe...
But why don't you guys just order a stock standard G5 2.5 with its pussy little ATI 9600. This standard config should ship the fastest. Then when the kickass monster nVidia 6800 cardis actually available in August (or later), order it. (Possibly sell the ATI 9600 on eBay.)
That would get you the G5 to use at least a month earlier, and you'll still be getting the nVidia card at about the same time as if you'd waited for the G5 to be held up.
Am I missing something?

My computer geek days are long behind me unfortunately... or I would.
My days of yanking out graphics cards and swapping them out dates back to the Apple ][ and that wonderful 80 column card, and the IBM PC with it's awesome Hercules graphics card that was no less than 16" long! Dipswitches, Drivers bla, bla, bla! too much to keep up with!
I don't do much more than add RAM to machines these days without taking it in to a "pro"

Great idea. If I were in hurry I'd do that. Someone did say, though, in this thread or another, that the stock card was actually causing slightly more delay than one of the other cards. Sorry, I can't remember how that went and I'm too lazy to go find it. Any other card than the 6800 will ship much sooner, so your idea is a good one. If you have to spend more for the cards but yours ships out "ground" as soon as the machine is built then that is quicker by far than waiting for an overnight machine with 6800. Plus, overnight shipment of a 55 pound package must cost a heck of a lot! That offsets somewhat the price of doing this.

I didn't do it partly because of the money saved from the EDU discount, and partly because my parents are paying for the computer, and it would be too hard to explain to my severely computer illiterate parents why I need another $600 for a video card, and then tell them about how Ebay works. My parents already freaked out enough about having to use a credit card.

I would call you a spoiled brat.... but then when I was in my teens, my parents were buying me Apples and IBM's with a lot of stuff that I had absolutely no "need" for at a cost of $3-4000 per system..!! and that was in 1982 dollars!
