Howdy,

This is my first post. I bought my son a used iMAC a few years ago and although it's working fine, I am not able to passoword-protect the computer. I went to the "Help" section and when I tried to access the Password Security Control Panel, I got a message saying the control panel was disabled or uninstalled. How can I install this or otherwise password-protect the computer?

Mucho thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for replying. I think the iMAC is a G3, I think the older version G3. The operating system is 8.6. Hope this helps.

Thanks.

Ok, here is the bad news: afaik, there is no built-in password protection, at least, nothing comparable to a modern OS like OS X.

In OS 9, Apple introduced multpiple users, which does something like that. It's a solution, but not really tight.

For OS 8.6, I think you had to turn to a third party solution.
I don't know of any, it's just too long ago....
Looking for it in Google, I couldn't find anything but a file protection.
