so i purchased a rev. b dual 1.8 and was expecting a pioneer superdrive, but it appears that it's actually a LG GWA-4082B; according to:

http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=226

which reviews the "GSA-4082B" (note the "s" instead of the "w"), this drive, "[Offers] support for both the DVD-Multi and DVD+ReWritable specifications, these drives have the ability to write to all major DVD formats, including DVD-RAM."

interesting. i guess this is better than the pioneer? i hope it's flashable to be dual layer compatible.

Now THAT is interesting. Is it possible to make these drives dual-layer just with new firmware?? I guess I did hear that some drives have the capability built in, but it's disabled in firmware. Can anyone comment on this?

How do you know what drive is in there? ASP?

I don't think so. Both Pioneer & the firmware hackers support the Pioneer drives with updated firmware on a much more aggressive basis. The LG drive is a cheaper drive for Apple to install.

Apple should have done their homework before selecting this drive. Cdfreaks.com found the following issues:

· Poor write quality and compatibility with many types of CD-R discs.
· Writes many 4 X DVD-R media at 2X only.
· Questionable write quality with many types of DVD-/+R discs.
· Scored only 75 points in the CD-Speed advanced audio test, which may cause it to
extract audio imperfect.
· Do easily generate unwanted read errors while reading discs in CloneCD.
· Only 2 Mb buffer.
· Can’t write 99 minutes discs (max overburning is 94 minutes).
· Slow at reading music discs and CD-RW discs.
