What about old VGA screens? Does the card come with DVI output that also carries the analog signal or is it the stripped DVI that is purely digital?

It's hard to tell. The 6800 Ultra from Apple is clearly not the PC variant as the PC 6800 Ultra does not come with dual Dual Link DVI. Couldn't find any info on nVidia's page about the Apple 6800 card.
However the pro graphics cards from nVidia, the Quadro, come with dual Dual Link DVI. And those do not offer VGA. At least none that have Dual Link DVI.
So assuming that the 6800 Ultra Apple uses is in fact a re-labelled Quadro, the answer would be no VGA.

The Apple Store info itself is a bit vague:

Support for ADC, DVI and VGA
Each graphics card option (except the GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL) comes standard with both an ADC and DVI port allowing both ADC and DVI based flat panel to directly connect. VGA based monitors attach to the DVI port via the included DVI to VGA adapter. The GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL features two DVI ports. ADC displays attach using an optional (sold separately) Apple DVI to ADC adapter.

This seems to suggest that you can in fact connect 2 VGA monitors to the 6800 by using two DVI to VGA adapters on the card's two DVI ports.


To make matters worse, nVidia's 6800 Tech Specs page doesn't even mention the word 'VGA' anywhere, suggesting that the card does not support VGA at all.

So you can use it with your existing (already paid for) dual 21" monitors. Wider viewing angle, higher refresh rates, potentially better color accuracy. I would not be surprised if FPS gamers have an advantage using a CRT with the higher refresh rates.

Getting the best video card now may require getting new monitors later.

Oh, and if a customer was paying me $600 for a video card, he/she could use it for whatever they want to as far as I'm concerned.

PowerMacs come with a dvi-vga adapter so you should have no problems

I think so. Although we'll find out for sure in a couple months when Apple starts shipping the 6800's.

And yes, CRT's are still the choice for gaming, imo. I have a 22" diamondtron flanked by two LCD panels, which I use to hold my palettes/control panels for various programs.
