I know the G5 has 3 firewire ports:

1 fw400 on the front, 1 fw400 on the back, and 1 fw800 on the back.

Are these all on the same bus? Is the front a separate bus from the back? Are the two back ports on their own buses?

This is important to me, because I intend to use two firewire drives, which I assume would work much better on their own busses.

Thanks!

From the official Apple Reference Material (with emphasis by me)

The three FireWire ports share a single power supply that can provide up to 15 watts total. The three ports are all on the same FireWire bus and can connect to up 62 other FireWire devices.

Oh, I guess I should've found that, then. Well, many many thanks!

Hmm. I wonder why it doesn't have 3 FW800 ports?

Because FW400 is still quite popular and probably costs less.

I think people would be annoyed if they had to buy all-new FireWire cables just to use their older FW gear. At this point, most people are still using only FW400 devices.
