So I have yet another Western Digital 80GB (WD800) go out on me... this time I had a one month backup and I am only slightly pissed. For the story, I have a PowerMac G4 Digital Audio and I had an 80gb WD and a 60gb Maxtor as slave. I was wiping one of the partitions from the 60gb to move some items over. I selected all (about 20gb of mp3 - my iPod backup that I planned on iPodRipping later) and deleted. All went well, and then I get the beach ball... so I wait, so I have dinner, and I wait. ****.

Well, I tried to kill Finder, I tried almost everything besides rebooting and shutting down. Then I tried rebooting and shutting down. I would get the grey booting screen and a never-ending boot meter. I ran TechTool Pro and I even bought Drive 10. I ran Disk Utility. All say my volume is bad and it needs to be repaired. Nothing would repair it. Drive 10 would hang. Disk Utility would just stop and TechTool Pro for some reason wasn't intuitive enough and I don't think it has any features for repair. I tried "Repair On" but it failed. So, I formatted after booting from Firewire HD.

I installed Panther again and restored from a .mac backup I had on CD. Apple Update popped up during the middle so I cancelled and thought, I will do that when I get done. I rebooted like it asked... grey boot screen with never-ending loader.

So I formatted again. This time, no restore but I did run Apple Update. I went to bed so that it could download and install. When I awoke, I reboot, took a shower and notice... grey booting screen with never-ending boot meter (that circle thingee).

So tonight I might take out the 80gb WD and put it in my Cube to isolate the issue. I think I might just scrap this HD (which sucks since it was manuf. in late 2002 - THAT'S TOO EARLY!!)

So since I might have answered my questions... here's another. I like having one portable (but not for primary use) and one desktop as well as one server for storage and so on. I've got a 15" AlBook, a Cube (current "server") and PowerMac 733 for desktop. Is there an easier solution than a dedicated Cube or PowerMac to act a server for just storage?
