Hello

I hope this belongs here. I may have a faulty internal modem in the G4 dual 1 ghz.

apple palo alto things the failure to properly disconnect after a continuous tone on dial-up requireing a reboot may be the result of a problem with my providers modems.

I use earthlink, and this has been a problem rarely for ever and Ive thought it was a bug in the OS X and all incarnations.

it has gotten worse. I have 15 local access numbers, and am trying them and earthlink tried to help but its its there modems I doubt tech support knows about this.

new internal modems on the web cost about $15.

if I decided to try this, what brand should I try?

thanks rotut

Other than the Apple internal modem, there are no internal modems for Macs.

but they don't make them? so I go down to fry's and look in the apple section?

do you think my troubles are the modem if sometimes ( one of many issues) when it tries to connect, it says no carrier tone detected, but connects the next time I try having done nothing but try again??

thanks

It may be worth re-seating the modem card and unplugging and replugging the lead. Also, there's a modem firmware upgrade available from the Apple site. It only runs in OS 9 IIRC.

Hope this helps

You might find one on eBay. But it would probably be easier and cheaper to buy an external modem.

Actually, we can get any part for any machine that isn't considered obsolete. I don't think I can get parts for an 8500, but I don't have any problem ordering parts for a B&W G3. Any service center you get a part through is going to have some markup on a part they order. Therefore, you can expect an Apple internal modem to be from $100 to $150 depending on the model.

You would do well to check with preowned electronics. They give a 6 month warranty on their parts. They *will* have the modem.

BTW, have you check to see if the system does the exact same thing in a different building connecting to a different ISP?

What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far? Other than lightning damage, modems tend to be pretty sturdy, and I think it's more likely a software problem than anything else.

I've got an Apple modem for sale. It's from my QuickSilver. If you're interested, shoot me a private message.

I went to Apple Palo Alto and spoke with a 'genius' (sic) he did seem to know a lot about modems as he had workd in the bay area with large companies that had many, probably isps.

he suggested I change the V92 to V90, and uncheck send PPP echo packets.

then I called Earthlink, and they seemed helpfull, but I suspect the tech support human on the line did not know about bad modems at earthlink possibley causing the problem.

as I said, there are a zillion local numbers here, adnd IM working my way though them

I still get the problem. one is when I open the INternal MOdem to connect, some times it takes several seconds and nothing happpens and then the dialog box says No carrier tone chech modem and connection.

as everything is connected,m I just try again and it almost always works the second time. the % times it does this I do not know.

the bigger problem, is after dialing, I sometimes get an eventual continues tone that stays there, and then the disconnect doesn't really disconnect and the force quit does nothing to reset the modem, as reopeming its stuck in a discoonnect that as far as I know needs a reboot.

If Im exporting a QT file that takes 45 minutes, Im stuck.

this is the biggest anoyance for me. there seems to be no way to force the modem to quit or recomfigure itself at that time.

I have run disk first aid but that didn't do anyhting.

the hardware CD check that came with this computer never worked, and If I can find the time, I may take it down to Apple PA and see it they can give me one that works.

maybe it can check for hardware issuse with the modem in the G4

any thoughts?

thanks rotut

That *sounds* like a modem to me. The fact that you are having issues with it not disconnecting and with the handshake are pointing to a faulty modem. Being thunderstorm season down here, I have seen several of these in the past month. Switching out the modem makes the problem go away.
