I Ordered a new G5 2.5 with the ATI 9800XT. I do have two displays: 1600x1200 and 1280x1024. I never play any games. I will mostly use the computer for development, some editing of home movies, internet and word processing.

Should I upgrade to the new NVidia 6800? If I stay with the 9800XT will the video stay very usable over the next three years with new applications and new OS versions?

Thank you.

What you have is fine, but the 6800 will murder the 9800 XT. But both will be adequate cards in 3 years, I would think—just the 6800 plenty more adequate. It depends on how badly you want the power, dude. Personally, I would spring for the 6800 if I had the money to do so.

I occasionally game, so I did for that reason alone. However, the up and comming OS X.4 (Tiger) is supposed to take advantage of the graphics card even more so than Quartz does now for 2D graphics etc.., so that is also another reason to consider the best available card which for now is the 6800.

I would have configured the machine with the low end video card and then purchased the retail ATI 9800. ATI has software that allows you to configure the retail card in many ways that you are unable to do with the card from Apple. ATI also upgrades the firmware/ROM's from time to time to enhance performance, something you will not be able to do with the Apple card.

Unless you are driving the 30" display, the nvidia is a total waste, regardless of playing games, Photoshop, or editing movies, etc.
Cheers,

Just say "NO" to PLASTIC SPEAKERS!!

I don't know about "total waste"?? After all, if you do play 3D graphics games, it's going to be a lot faster and smoother at higher Res, no way to get around that..... NOW, if you don't play the games, then yes, I would agree it's a waste, and for him that may well be the case... unless OS X.4 down the road gets apps that are GPU intensive that are not games, what apps? I don't pretend to know...

The GeForce 6800 is only useful in two situations on the Mac: if you play recent games often, or if you want to drive that 30" Cinema Display. If you don't do either, then the 9800 XT is all you'll need - and only for the 256 MB of VRAM, at that. Many people here would be happy with the 9600 XT.
