Hi people-

I just bought a 512MB Ram block for my G5 (dual 2.0).

I've fitted the block, but my computer fails to recognise it!
I've read the manuals, but am a bit conbfused: Do I *have* to fit Ram in pairs in the two different bays?

There are eight slot inside my machine, in two groups of four.

The first slot in each bay contains a block of 256MB, wich shipped with my machine.

I have tried installing the RAM in each bay- but to no avail.

I'm really worried that I may have bought dud Ram! It's definitelt PC 3200, DDR... I can't see why it won't work...!

Please help if you can!

You MUST upgrade G5 ram in pairs.

AAArrrrgggH!

I'm such an idiot!

I should have gone for the 2 x 256MB blocks

I guess I'll just save some more money and buy another 512MB block.... If the RAM is different brands, will that be a problem?

1.5GHZ sounds fun, though.... Will I feel a big difference?

Thanks for your help, guys....

It is probably a common mistake, so don't worry about. If you're looking for good prices on name brand RAM, eWiz.com has great deals on Kingston memory kits (that contain two DIMMS). When I installed mine the memory was quite stiff and didn't want to go into the slot properly, so it took an unusually amount of force. Now I'm up and running just fine.

That sounds great, Thanks dude.

I only need one block as I already have this 'spare' one...

Is it okay to mix brands as pairs?

I wouldn't mix them. You can do it, but it's not a good thing...

Thanks guys-

Bighead, when you say 'a bad thing' do you mean it could mess up my machine? What exactly could go wrong?

I bought this RAM at a computer fair, and I'm not sure if I'll find the same stuff again...

The RAM I bought is:

SAMSUNG 512MB DDR.
PC3200 CL3.

It also has a whole bunch of other numbers on it, and says 'Converge'. Is that the brand? I'm sorry- I'm such a newbie to all this...

If I could just buy a second 512MB RAM block, it'd save me a lot of money and hassle of trying to return this one even though it's not actually faulty...

Any help / advice would be greatly apopreciated!

When they need to be installed together, it is intended that the RAM be "matched pairs" where the exact specifications are the same between the two chips. This generally means buying two of the same cards from the same manufacturer at the same time. Some places, like OWC even sell "matched pairs" for installing into G5s. You don't have to have all the RAM the same, but you want them to be the same in the respective pairs of memory sockets. The performance of the computer may be affected, but I don't think it will do any real damage to the computer. It just won't work well.
