A couple of months ago I shipped my G5 across the country. When I took it out of the box (the original one it shipped in), the damn drive door was stuck. It will stick in the closed position or the open position that I can change by pushing the plastic hinges in. I kind of want it back to normal though, and the guy at the genius bar promised me that it would take them 2 weeks to fix it. I want to have a crack at taking care of this myself. Are there any things I should know before I dive into dismantling my G5 case?

Get your G5 manual and go to Page 56. If you have not done so already, I would remove & re-install the optical drive. It may some how in the shipping process, misaligned the optical drive and the bay door.

Yeah, realize that if you take apart your G5 to get to the case parts, no reasonable technician would cover it under warranty after that.

This is actually in the Owner's manual & is an approved end-user procedure from Apple. If not wanting to do this, then your option is the original one you stated that you did not like.

It's easy to do and as pretty hard to mess something up to the point where Apple would be able to figure you did something to it. Just two levers and pop the ide cable loose from where it plugs into the board, not the drive, and slide it right out. Do the reverse to stick it back in.

Well I popped the drive out and tried to get a look at what was causing the problem. It seems that the plastic bracket that the hinges for the door attach to has somehow been pushed forward. If I hold it back in what I would presume its natural position would be the door works fine, and I tried to tape it back like that with some minor success. The door will now open to the pressure of the drive tray, but it still stays stuck in the down position. I also noticed some of the aluminum shielding was not very rigidly seated underneath the drive and could be wiggled around quite a bit, but that didn't seem to have any effect on the function of the door.

I think it is time to take it in to a authorized Apple Service Center.
