Hi All,

My Rev B 2.0 G5 has shipped, and I need to determine a couple of things.

I've got two 19" CRT monitors running on my present machine (G4/500), and I of course want to get them going on the new machine. I upgraded to the ATI 9600 128MB card when I ordered the G5, and I know that it will support two monitors, but I'm sure that I will need adaptors. Can anyone tell me what adaptors I will need?

Also, what is it about PCI-x that has changed? There is no chance I can use my old cards? (I've got an expensive SCSI card I'd hate to leave behind).

Thanks in advance for any assistance

ATI 9600 XT has ADC and DVI output, the included DVI>VGA adapter is for 1 monitor, I guess you'll need a ADC to VGA adapter, or something like it ...

Quote from Apple :

" Support for ADC, DVI and VGA
Each graphics card option (except the GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL) comes standard with both an ADC and DVI port allowing both ADC and DVI based flat panel to directly connect. VGA based monitors attach to the DVI port via the included DVI to VGA adapter. The GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL features two DVI ports. ADC displays attach using an optional (sold separately) Apple DVI to ADC adapter. "

Thanks d.fine for that info,

Ok, it sounds like I'll be able to hook up one VGA CRT immediately and will have to look for a ADC to VGA adaptor to hook up the second display. Found one after a quick google for $49 (http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=1299)

I was really worried there that my VGA monitors were suddenly obsolete! (well, one of them anyways). Looks like my PCI cards are (but the upgrade to G5 is worth it :-)

Thanks again,

Chas

Hi OzarkMtn,

The card in question is an Adaptec 2940U2W (ultra2 SCSI, 80Mb/sec). I know that it's an older card, but I have two 10,000 rpm SCSI drives that I've been using as PShop scratch drives with this card, and I'd hate to shelve them.

I'm sure that Adaptec has produced equivalent cards that will work in G5s, but I don't have the budget for that at the moment (I hope you'll forgive me for saying this, but anybody who thinks "if he can buy a G5 he shouldn't be whining about buying cards" should know that our house was burgled a week ago and I'm down £6000 worth of equipment that I'm slowly having to replace, starting with this G5).

Any chance you have good news regarding this card and G5s? (hey, one can hope :-)

Cheers!

np Looks good, and is not too expensive. I'm going to need that too, I have 2 17" CRT's that I'll want to hook up to my BTO G5 which is still underway ...
Thx for the link !

This is what I get for posting too quickly. Here is another option I've just found, even less expensive:

http://www.drbott.com/prod/db.lasso?code=0117-ADCV

only $25.00 (and £20.06 in the UK, not too much of a stupid price raise!). I'm for this one (Dr. Bott makes good stuff, in my experience)

My G5 has shipped, and was possibly going to be delivered today. The day is about 1/2 over, so I think I'm going to have to wait 'till Monday (arrgh!)

I know the feeling, I've been waiting too long (1 week)

Chasg,

I have a ATTO, ExpressPCI Pro UL4S for my U320, 10K SCSI drives that are in an external Burley enclosure from Granite Digital.

I would consider ATTO for a replacement SCSI card.

It really makes my Dual 2.0 GHz G5 scream. I have set up a striped RAID and I boot from SCSI RAID.

I have 2 Samsung 19's hooked up to my rev B 2.0 via VGA. 1 is hooked in through the supplied DVI->VGA, and I purchased the Griffin Tech ADC -> VGA. Works like a dream.

Hey OzarkMtn,

sounds like you've got a sweet setup!

You boot from a RAID? Forgive my ignorance, but why not boot from an internal SATA drive and use the RAID for high speed storage/scratch disks? (which is what I use my SCSI drives for)

When this G5 starts earning over and above what it costs, then I can think of expanding it :-)

Cheers!

Hi SafariX,

Thanks for that info.

Looks like the Dr. Bott adaptor tends to be cheaper than the Griffin (I'm very glad I asked this question before the G5 came in, it would've been tough to not have my two monitors!!)

Cheers!

got my G5! Installed my Crucial RAM!

Now I need to get: monitor adaptor for second monitor (what, only running one monitor? Insane!) and more HD space (I have a 160Gb drive in my old G4, and am pondering options for use with the G5: PCI card and use it internal, or USB box and use it external)

I haven't installed PShop yet (the main reason I upgraded), but it certainly feels faster.

Yay!

Chas
