Hello readers,
This is my first post here. I thank you in advance for your patience and expertise.
My wifes Imac has been freezing whenever we browse the internet using Internet Explorer 5.1. This requires us to do a hard shutdown. When the system reboots this message appears:
"The file "Internet Preferences" was damaged and has been reverted to a previous version. Some preference information may be lost. A copy of the damaged file has been placed in the trash."
This has been happening for over a month now and driving us crazy. I have deleted and reinstalled IE, trashed TSM preferences as suggested by others on this forum but the problem persists. Has anyone ever encountered this message or similar problem? Any suggestions?
IMAC OS 9.2.1
64 MB
Virtual M 65
Thank you for any help

Internet Explorer was always useless on OS 9. I'd recommend iCab It's more stable and faster than IE.

Yeah, those browsers are cool but we have to all admit that I.E surfs to more sights on the web than any other browser. I.E may have a few bugs but I.E. "owns" the web. I certainly hope Microsoft has a change of heart and decides to continue to do upgrades to the Mac version. Safari ain't cuttin' it!

We most certainly do not.
I have never used Internet Explorer and I guarantee you that I surf as much of the web as anybody else.
As for the original question: Yes, migrate away from Internet Explorer. There are faster, more up to date, more reliable alternatives.

I'm sure that was just a matter of speaking because there is no way you can guarantee that you surf the web as much as other people. There are some business and news sights that I surf to on the web that will not accept the Gekko browsers and therefore Internet Explorer is the only one that will work. Not all banking institutions will accept anything other than Internet Explorer to do online banking and in some cases only the Windows version will only be accepted.
I would much rather use the Gekko browsers because they are much faster but the fact of the matter is Internet Explorer is thee browser of the Internet and there are still several sights on the web that will only accept it.
Therefore I certainly hope that Microsoft continues to support it for the Macintosh. Sometimes I wonder what the Mac community will do if Microsoft pulls it completely away from the Mac platform?

So you're saying that for the sake of compatibility, people should continue to use a 3 year old browser that is already behind the curve and has problems displaying many modern sites properly? Just to do online banking?

Honestly I do everything it takes "not" to use Internet Explorer but there are several places that I surf to (not just online banking) that require Internet Explorer. I hate having to use it especially if the sight seems to only work with the Windows version. I do financial services and my company's websight is deicated to Internet Explorer and sometimes I have to use VPC to use the Windows version.
I've been a MacUser for several years and as much as I hate to admit it sometimes the Mac Gekko browsers are virtually useless. The Opera Browser is suppose to be open source but doesn't work everywhere. Microsoft has control on the MacUsers even with Windows Media Player for Macintosh. It doesn't work on all websights that require it.
I can gurantee that I am not alone being somewhat dependent on Internet Explorer for Macintosh.

I'd agree with that. There are some cases, rarely for most, when IE or a browser that is capable of identifying itself as IE is necessary.
But if you do not rely on IE, there really is little to no reason to use it today, which was the point I am trying to make.
If you have to fall back on IE a few times a month for whatever reason, so be it. But if you're using OS 9, which already has it's share of stability problems as we all know, don't make matters worse by relying on Internet Explorer as your web browser. It is the cause of most crashes on pre-XP/2000 Windows machines and a large percentage of crashes in OS 9.

Fantastic, now I totally agree!

I have a B&W G3 and i upgraded the ram to 390something and went to OSX just to use safari. It is much better now. I try not to use IE at all if I can help it. ( sometimes the banking sites need it) It seems to me that everything Microsoft crashed on me in OS9. OS X is much better if you can upgrade. The whole machine works better and the computer never crashes, (except for, you guessed it, MS Office programs.
