There is a second bay for adding a hard drive, but it seems the second drive needs rails...I slide it in and lock down the "B" tab, but the drive is loose in the slot. Is there something I am missing? TIA.

Just to the left of the drive bay are 4 screws that you attach to the new drive. The screws are screwed into the dividing "wall" between the hard drive and the optical drive. After attaching the screws, the new drive will then slide into the channels and be secure.

i posted links in this thread to apple docs with instructions for all the "customer installable parts" - the thread was for the optical drive, but the links cover everything. instructions, with drawings etc.

Not trying to slam you but this was fully documented in the owners manual. at least it was in mine and I have a rev A G5.

No biggie though. If you just looked in there and didn't look at the manual you could have easily missed it.

my second drive hadn't arrived when the G5 did, so I had enough time to calm down and discover the manual by the time the drive arrived (and so discovered the installation instructions :-)

I'm sure that if I'd had the drive when the G5 came in, I would have immediately jumped in and tried to install the drive. My old reflexes would've betrayed me (I would sure have been worried to find no Molex power connector!).

I do miss the swing-out motherboard arrangement, I thought that that was perfection in design (though my G5 is a zillion times quieter than any Mac I've had before, except perhaps the Plus, LOL!)

I don't miss it at all....sometimes the door wouldn't close fully on my bw g3, and worse, you actually had to be carefully not to crimp the ribbon cables (which I did somehow for the cd-rom drive).

Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!

Welll, now that you mention it, the clips that hold my G4 closed have broken off (I have to keep it shut with duct tape). I know that that's going to greatly reduce the selling price :-(

(honestly, I never abused it!)

but I liked this feature, it came out just when I was struggling with a period where I was a tech support slave in a medium-sized university and was coerced to work on <gasp> PCs. Scrabbling around in those cheap cases (they were no-name brands) was a nightmare!

This is getting off the track from the original thread, but you do not need to use duct tape (which is kind of Ducky). There is a case lock on the back of the machine. After you close the tower up, it will normally not stay shut firmly with the plastic clips broken off, but if you pull out the case lock and stick an old set of keys or something hooked so it will not fall through the hole produced when you pull out the lock, the case door will stay shut. I have the same issue with my old, old Sawtooth G4. Someone here on the board helped me with that, so obvious but you would never think of it!
Sorry, can't help with the devaluation part.

Hi David,

Good suggestion, I hadn't thought of that (well, I had considered it, but I'd just thought that that case lock would just keep the latch on the side from lifting, not actually hold the door shut. I didn't even try it out).

Cool, I really appreciate the suggestion (the duct tape keeps getting warm and losing its stickiness, and I keep having to replace it with more. There is a lot of ugly residue left behind that I'm going to have to clean off somehow before selling it :-(

Chas
