I am wanting to install an additional 512mb of ram in my sisters new eMac. What is the best type of ram to use. I am seeing CL2, CL3 and other kinds. I found a good price at Other World Computing on a 512mb stick for under $100. It was CL3.

Suggestions wanted.

You don't need to buy it from them, especially if you can find it cheaper elsewhere, but using Crucial's RAM checker guide thing is the easiest way of finding out what you want to find out. Anyway, "512MB DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • DDR333 • 2.5V • 64Meg x 64" seems to be the kind of RAM you need.

Megasad, your link is for a 1.25ghz eMac using DDR. The ram I need is for the 1ghz eMac with Superdrive. It does not use DDR. It runs at 133mhz bus speed.

Does anyone know if the 256 ram stick that comes factory installed in the 1ghz eMac is CL2 or CL3? I am wanting the best performing ram I can get. I read at Crucial that the added memory will only be as fast as the weakest link. If the computer comes with CL3, putting a CL2 stick in won't make a difference.

I assumed the 1.25GHz model because you said it was a new eMac, so here is the page for all the eMacs ever; clicky. Going to crucial.com would have worked also. And CL2 seems to be the way to go.

For some reason, System Profiler frequently displays PC133 RAM as PC100. Until this bug is fixed, do not rely on System Profiler for determining RAM requirements.

The machine's configuration sticker usually says it (e.g. "256 PC133"), but you can also just go to crucial and use their configurator.

What is really the max ram an older 1GHZ emac can take? System specs say 1024... but judging from my experience with older iMacs, apple undersells the RAM abilities.

I have a 256 stick in now, one open slot, if I buy a one gig stick, will the extra be used or ignored? I'd rather not buy two 512 sticks and have to resell the 256 one, prefer to have the max ram I can for the machine without wasting that 256 stick.

Thoughts?
