After getting a 933 G4 iBook in Dec last year i have caught the Apple OSX bug!

Just recieved my Bonus and blown it straight away!

A Dual 1.8 G5 with 2 gig ram, Airport Ex, 9600XT 128, 160gig hd, no modem or Superdive [have external Pioneer 107]

£1700 of my hard earned pounds goin to an Apple reseller, so i have the luxury [my nails and nerves will thank me someday]of not having a tracking order on the apple site. Just sit and wait now. Have been told 8 working days, but am dubious!!

Now to find a nice lookin LCD with the little cash i have left [no cinema displays for me i'm afraid!]

Cant wait

Chris
ps Final Cut Express for only £70, little profit on ebay there me thinks!0.

Congrats!

Yes, once you've been bitten by the Mac bug it's nearly impossible to resist. But the ride is fun and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Do they have the 17" Apple Studio Display over there? That would be a nice compliment to your dual and very reasonalbly priced compared to the Cinema Displays.

Can get a nice 19in for that unfortunately.

I arent desperate, my 19in crt will do, maybe wait to see what comes out with the new imac [ie headless smaller lcd] before getting something.

I bought a pair of Samsung 955 DF Silver bezel CRTs for my 2.0 rev B. They are really good monitors (especially for the price).

Congrats, though it seems a bit mild after reading the dual display thread and hearing about totally tricking out their credit card with top-of-the-line/max EVERYTHING including dual displays.
Makes me feel just a little humble only placing an order for a silver Mini a couple of days ago.

The 17" Studio Display was also the singularly most-overpriced item in Apple's lineup. Comparable third-party displays are 30-40% cheaper.

So that 1700 sterling turns out to over $3100 USD. Could you have pulled off buying a better G5 in the states, flown it back in your luggage (obviously) unpacked and just put in a suitcase and check it in? Would customs give a beef and slap a VAT or could you pull it off as saying that you're just bringing it back because it had to be "fixed" quickly or something?

Just trying to think of a way to get more for your money. Obviously, you'd have to pay airfare and other expenses too.

Word of advice for anyone wanting to import stuff themselves into the UK.

A friend of mine in the US (I am in London) just lent me US$1500 worth of camera equipment. He sent it by mail.

When it arrived, it came with a bill for GBP£233!! (about US$400, almost a third of its worth!). A little bit more than I had anticipated (my fault for not checking it out in advance, let me share my hard earned experience with you...).

Took some research to figure out how that came about.

Seems duty on this sort of equipment is 6.7%, and it's calculated on a) value of the equipment plus b) cost of shipping plus c) cost of insurance.

_Then_ VAT is added on, and it's calculated at 17.5% on a) value of the equipment plus b) cost of shipping plus c) cost of insurance PLUS d) the duty calculated above! (jeez, exponential tax).

I'm beginning to understand where the idea of "rip-off Britain" has come from. If I'd known, I honestly would have flown over to get the stuff and bring it back here (it really is a loan, and has to go back in 1/2 a year, so I don't even get to keep it.

Of course, you might get away with it by carrying goods through yourself, but if you get caught, the hammer will fall (plus fines, and duty on fines, and tax on fines, and tax on tax on tax on fines...it's good to be the government, money for free!)

Plus desktop warranties aren't international (unlike laptop warranties), so you'd have to ship it back to the States for servicing (to be honest, that's the _main_ reason I didn't fly over, buy a new G5, and then fly back. I just bought mine here, and I don't want to think how much cheaper it is in the US).

Chas
