I have a Gigabit Ethernet G4 which has a really noisy (annoyingly so) main case fan. I saw a fix on xlr8yourmac where someone put some foam padding pieces in the fan housing. Has anyone here tried this, and has it helped?
The fan noise is probably going to be critical since I'm going to be installing a GigDesigns dual 1.4 upgrade pretty soon, which has two fans of its own. So I'd like to minimize noise as much as I can. All suggestions (well, reasonable ones, anyway) welcome.

Yes I did and it really made no change in sound level. I have a GigaDesign 1.2 and the fan on that one sounds more than the other fans. To put this in perspective it is much quiter than the dual 1.25 I have at work and I really like the speedbost on my tired G4/400. I just wished that GD had used a larger heatsink and larger quiter fan. But to some degree you have to take the heat and noise that comes with speed.
The 1.2 G4 with its fan is not as quite as the 400 MHz cpu and the ATI 8500 with the fan is not dead quite as the fanless ATI 128pro, bigger faster HDs also tend to be the same

I had apple ship me the replacement fans about a year ago and finally got around to installing them when the computer got to be insanely loud. I noticed that it was quieter but not as much as I thought it would be. Then i got some canned air and starting spraying, and a huge layer of crap came off of a front vent. Needless to say the comp's pretty quiet now. Things were getting absurd.
As a side note, I'm so glad I did that because I also know the internals a lot better. I was kind of apprehensive about messing around w/ everything (i know software not hardware) but it was so easy.

I just took the fan part and cleaned everything, but it's still as noisy as ever. Oh well...maybe the CPU fans will drown it out.
