I just upgraded my home computer from an iMac G3 400MHz to a Power Mac G4 dual 1.25GHz, and I have some questions. I've never owned, or even used a Power Mac before, only iMacs and iBooks.

The fan in the Power Mac seems to change pitch quite frequently, is this normal? It sounds like it's having trouble staying at the same speed more than a few minutes.

I remember reading, some time ago, that one could replace the built-in modem with a built-in serial port. Is this still possible, or was that specific to some previous model of G4? I haven't used a modem in years, but I could frequently use a serial port. If I can't convert the modem port, are there any PCI cards that would give me a serial port instead? (I'm familiar with the USB -> serial option but not keen on it, I'd rather have a 'real' serial port.)

What would be a good choice of speakers for the PowerMac? I'm no audiophile, I just like to listen to iTunes occasionally. I have those apple pro speakers on my iMac at work and they seem ok there. At C$95 they seem a bit expensive though.

Thanks alot!

Congrats on the new machine.

The G4 1.25 GHz is a fine machine. I'd have to guess that the fan speed is variable ramping up and down as needed. I'd download a temprature app and see what corralation there is between the fan speed and the temp. My G5's fan speed changes as the temp changes so I have to assume the G4 is the same way.

Never heard of pulling the modem out for a serial device. If its possible then OWC will have it so check them out.

I liked the sound sticks myself but they can be expensive too. I'm sure other's here who are audiophiles can better answer this.

I assume that you want a serial port because you have legacy serial devices, otherwise you should get used to the USB devices as you'll have a very hard time finding serial devices nowadays. Here is the main company that made serial port transition devices, I believe they have a serial port PCI card - Keyspan.
