Just got a new dual 1.8 with upgraded 160GB drive. Great machine, but the hard drive seems fairly noisy. It makes a fairly pronounced crackling noise whenever accessing data. The noise itself doesn't sound abnormal (the drive in my powerbook makes a similar but less frequent and much fainter sound), but it's just kind of loud (louder than fans, for instance). Is this fairly typical of this drive, or is it something to be concerned about? Thanks.

Nah. The drive in my dual-2G sounds like a popcorn popper most of the time. Sure is nasty-sounding, though, isn't it? You have this slick piece of modern sculpture sitting there, making noise like it's some ancient 286 PC.

depends on the brand of the drive I bet.

IBM/Hitachi drives tend to be the loudest- all of mine have made a distinct crackle.

If it crackles on some reads but not all of them, you might have a read head problem and might want to gt a replacement.
