I'm looking at possibly buying one of the last remaining G4 towers on the Apple Store (still available on the Education and ADC stores), but it's unclear which model they are. The first iteration of the 1.25 GHz G4 was way back in late 2002, when it was top-of-the-heap. Mid-2003 a new revision came out, placing the 1.25 GHz chip in the middle, with the new king being the 1.42 GHz model.

The newer models didn't boot into OS 9, but Apple says that the current crop does. So what's up - did Apple have such a huge overstock of older Power Mac G4s that they still haven't run out of the late-2002 model?

What probably happened was that they continued producing the older model so that they'd have a Power Mac that could still boot into OS 9 (remember, we're talking pre-Quark 6 days here).

What I'm hoping, though, is that some of the enhancements that made it into the mid-2003 revision (like the quieter fans) have also since trickled down into the "current" G4 tower.

Anyone bought one of these who can comment on speed, fan noise, etc? I'm looking at using the ADC hardware purchase discount, so the price is quite nice (and yeah, I know I should just get a G5, but they're a little too pricey and overkill for what I'm gonna do with it).

They use the 2002 motherboard because, as you guessed, it was necessary to use it for OS 9 booting.

As far as I know, everything else about the Rev2 MDD, including the quieter cooling system, made it into the current MDDs.
