Hello All,
Here is my set-up and my problem:
SETUP:
G4, QS, 800Mhz, running Panther (OS 10.3.4), Video Card AGP: ATI 9000 Pro (64MB), Monitors: Two Apple 15" Studio Display LCD: One directly plugged into the ATI Card ADC Port, the other plugged into the DVI Port via an Apple DVI to ADC converter (the powered Apple product at $100). I run on Extended Desktop Mode (not mirror). Primary Application: ProTools Mix Plus in OS 9.2.2
PROBLEM:
In Panther everything works perfectly. It is critical that I have Extended Desktop Mode in 9.2.2 for ProTools apps BUT when I reboot into 9.2.2 I GET A FREEZE-UP. Here are the details:
FIRST: I do a restart in 9.2.2 from Panther. Once booted the mouse pointer moves but the click function is dead. IE: the click will not highlight nor open anything: it is disfunctional.
THEN: I do a reset/restart (from front of tower). If I tell the "Your Computer was not Shut down properly..." screen to "Stop", the mouse click works. The mouse still will work for the next prompt when I click "Done". Then the computer continues booting and the mouse click becomes inactive (though the mouse can still be moved) once 9.2.2 is completed with the boot.
When I put my old ATI 128Pro card back into the AGP Slot, 9.2.2 and the mouse work just fine with one Apple Studio Display LCD monitor attached. However, the ATI 128 does not support Extended Desktop Mode, so it is useless to me.
I also tried a workaround with the mouse connected directly to the tower rather than to the monitor: same problem.
GOAL: My primary use of this Mac is for music recording and mixing . The system I use for this music application, ProTools Mix Plus, does not run in OSX, so I must do a system boot into OS 9.2.2. I really need to have Extended Desktop Mode (where the desktop is displayed-extended-over both monitors, not mirrored) available on this G4 when I revert to OS 9.2.2.
QUESTION(S) I believe ATI says the 9000 Pro supports OS 9 as well as OSX, so what is the problem? Obviously (I think) the ATI 9000Pro is crashing the mouse OS 9.2.2. I am willing to look at any fixes that will give me the two monitorsin Extended Desktop Mode while in OS 9.2.2.
I really appreciate your input and help. I purchased the CPU, a second monitor, the ADC-DVI converter and the new ATI card ALL for the purpose of having extended desktop mode (IE: a large display area) for the ProTools application in os 9.2.2.
Thanks for your ideas/solutions.

Sounds like it could be a few things. Try putting in the old card, load up the software for the 9000 and then try it again. It might be an extensions conflict so you might need to experiment with a different set.

I agree with bstone. Make sure you have the latest OS 9 drivers for that card.

Tank you both for the input.
I loaded the latest drivers for the 9000 and still have the problem. I have gone into the extensions mgr. only once before, and as it was virgin territory to me I created a real mess!!! Know a bit more now, but am hesitant to begin fooling around with extensions without more advice.
BTW: Very interesting geographics in the responses: I live very near to Edmonds (Vashon Island) and have family in Tel Aviv!! Small world.
Extensions approach advice???
Thanks again,
felix

I have the new 9000 Pro (128MB) and the freeze-up in OS 9 is a documented problem. In order to install the OS 9 drivers from ATI, you need to either a) start up your Mac with "OS 9 base set" enabled, or b) go into the current extensions set and turn off everything you can find from ATI. After that, your installation will proceed as normal, then reboot, and you'll be okay.

Macola-Thanks, I noticed considerable documentation at the ATI site RE: mouse problems, but missed the fix you suggest. I'll be on it tonight or latest tomorrow.
??? After I reboot with with OS9 Base Set, I presume ProTools (the music recording software and hardware-2 PCI cards- system I use) extensions will be off. Do I then manually go in and turn them on in a Base Set copy which becomes my new working set of extensions?
Thanks,
Felix Misch

After installing the ATI drivers, you can go back to "My Settings" (or whatever you've named your current extension set) and the new ATI extensions should still be active. HTH.
