My friend bought a G5 Dual 1.8 rev A and it suffers from random crashes. Apple Hardware test and Techtool Pro didn't detect any problems. We even brought the machine back to the shop and there it was checked too. My friend paid 30 EUR but the problem wasn't solved. He was told that too many files on the desktop caused the crashes. Can you believe that? After re-installation of the system software and all the updates through the internet, the problem wasn't gone.
We repaired permissions and used Cache Out X and Cocktail without result.
The computer freezes when a window is moved in the finder, unless the monitor is set to 256 colors. We can still move the mouse, but the G5 doesnt react anymore...
We hear disk activity for a few seconds before the computer locks up. Keyboard shortcuts don't work, so we are unable to force quit. The only solution is a hard restart.

The problem seems to be related to the video-card (a Geforce 5200) or to its drivers since I assume that the card isn't accelerated in 256 colors.
We are desperate...

And we have read other threads of random lockups with other Macs in Panther.
Is Panther really so buggy?

Is there something like an extension manager such as Conflict Catcher in OS9 to disable the NVIDIA accelerator extension?

TIA

Panther isn't that buggy.

If you can duplicate the crashing, bring it back to the dealer again. It sounds like the video card is defective.

As for too many files on your desktop yes I've of that too. It made sense to me the way it was explained. Unfortunately I don't have the source material and I won't explain it right. suffice it to say if you have hundreds of files on the desktop performance will take a hit (and possibly stability)

Sounds like you have your solution, just run in 256 colors all the time. Sure it sucks, but I'm sure there's some nostalgia value to be had there.

Do you remember playing one of those VGA strip-poker games back in the early 90's?? Pr0n in 320x200 resolution w/256 colors, them were the days...

Um, OS X can't run in 256 colors, so either your mistaken and running at thousands or you're just making stuff up.

Well huh, I've never seen that. Strange.

And that's a horrid screen shot.

The picture quality at 256 colors is noticeable inferior to thousands of colors.

We replaced the videocard and the G5 doesn't freeze anymore. My friend has now a terrific computer. I am going to buy the same Dual 1.8.
Thanks to all of you who gave us help.
