I have followed the instructions on this page, which is very helpful.

Im a little confused. The site talks about SDRAM but the SDRAM is nothing like I expected, I have some pc SDRAM, but I have no idea where to find this type of memory in the uk.

At the moment, I have 96Mb of ram. I assume that this is a 32 and a 64. Should I buy a new 128 and put that into place of the 64 and then put the 64 into the place of the 32.

Please help a newbie!!!

I upgraded the RAM in my Bondi last year.

The iMac uses notebook style SODIMM's. Purchased generic 256M SODIMM and it worked fine. SODIMM's are smaller lengthwise than standard RAM.

Be comfortable getting into a case with tight clearances or get somebody else to upgrade for you. You'll be working near some high voltages so you want to be comfortable inside the box. It's not extremely difficult, but it's definately harder than installing RAM in a B&W.

Best of luck.

Thanks for that advice Chinasaur.

I am ok working with electrical bit, I have the tools but I am used to pcs which I agree are a lot easier than an iMac.

I am looking at the cost of SODIMM memory. Am I correct that I can only have a total of 192Mb RAM in my iMac?

Nope. That was a while ago when SODIMM's were bigger. I have 288MB. I had 32MB below the riser card IIRC, and added a 256MB SODIMM. I could add another 256. In the picutre they show two SODIMM's. I purchased the chip size on the right..the lower profile...was all they had. Using two of those chips you should be able to put in 512, even in a Rev A, if the chip is the right size. Use this tutorial from same site for upper slot - http://www.theimac.com/ram_vram_steps.shtml

My Rev A is acceptably fast running 10.3. OS 9 was faster but crashed. 10.2.X is slower than 10.3. I use it for a jukebox, light surfing and camera docking station.
