Hi,
I am new to the powermac forum, and am trying to learn as much as I can about my powermac through new and old posts.
I recently traded my 17" 1ghz powerbook for a single g5 1.8, 1.5gb memory, 160 + 80 gb hard drives, ap extreme, 20" apple cinema display, and soundsticks. Good deal?
I just wanted to know what things I WON'T be able to do because it is a single g5. Since I am a freak, I'm already thinking of upgrading to a dual g5. I plan on doing video and photo editing, and my wife is really into music.
Since the trade, we really haven't had a chance to use it.
Your opinions are so appreciated.
Thanks!!

For the work you want to do a dual G5 would be what you need for video/ music.

I'm in the same situation. How does one "upgrade" like this? E-bay the single 1.8 and then buy a new 2.5? This seems expensive. Any other options?

My suggestion is that instead of trying to speculate on how happy you will be with your current machine, you should just use it for a month or so and see. The 2.5s are barely shipping (if at all) so chances of you getting one soon are pretty slim. And since you already bought the single, you may as well use it. It won't lose a noticible amount of resale value in a month or two.
I think there is a real danger in always wanting the very 'best' of something, even if you don't really need it. I like my computers to do what I ask of them; how new they are is irrelevent.
There is actually nothing that you can do on a dual that you can't on a single G5; some operations are just faster.
And there is no current way of adding a second processor to a G5.

Even with a single 1.8 g5 you've still got a kickass machine. Unless you just have to have the dualie, I'd say stick with the single.

Hi,
I guess I'm just looking at the most futureproof machine which probably will always be different.
I think if everyone says that I will be able to run everything that a dual can but just slower (I don't play games), then I think I may just keep the single.
Let me know,
Thanks!!

As an Apple shareholder I say go ahead and buy a dual 2.5... As a regular person I woudl tell you that the single 1.8 will be great for using FCP, etc... I have edited for broadcast material in FCP on a G3 iMac. Of course a dual 2.5 will kill a single 1.8, but a 1.8 G5 is more than adequate for doing what you want.

Really man.. come on.. A guy at work uses one of our single 1.8's in his spare time to edit a low budget movie he shot years ago on film.
Do you want us to tell you your to much man for that little computer or what? Freeken use it, if you feel the computer is holding you back enought that your time is worth more, upgrade..
