I found one amongst some old stuff in a storage room.
So, what's this old Mac (vintage '94) able to do ?

Absolutely useless ?
Linux backup server ?
BeOS test machine ?

what's your suggestion.

Back in the old days, I had an entire domain running on a 6100/60 running MkLinux. It had DNS, a web server, and a mail server on it, and it served us quite well until we got an SGI a few years later.

nice, do you remember the specs ?
anyway, I think I'll have to invent a way to install Linux on it without using a monitor. (ita has that old crappy connector, and I can't find a VGA adapter)

I do believe MkLinux will work well on it. You can use it for file storage, shell access, ftp/sftp server, network firewall, etc. That old machine ain't dead yet and it can be used for really usefull things.

Ok, I did some research for a couple of hours, Mklinux runs fine, and Debian can be loaded with a lot of hacking.

anyway, it can't be used as a backup server, HDD bandwith is about 1MB/s (dog slow), plus, the interface is SCSI, massive HDD's are veeeery expensive.

that leaves me with ........ router/firewall, maybe some web/ftp for small file sharing over inet.
That would be about it.

I will also have to find some old RAM for it. It has 48 megs. Will need to max it out at whooping 72MB before I do anything.

Other suggestions ?

You could also install AppleShareIP. Run classic Mac OS and use it as a file/print/web server.

I have one Performa 6116CD at home and 6115CD in the office.

I would like to do something on it. The 6116CD is loaded with add-on HPV card, L2 cache, 4GB SCSI HDD, and 136MB of RAM.

Wish to run MkLinux or YDL on it

You can run MkLinux on it, but YDL is based on LinuxPPC, which requires "new World" ROMs, so the 7200/7500/8500/9500 is the minimum for it.

And there is a way to hack it to get Debian working, but I don't think you want to do that. I read the howto and it was gross.

yeah, I found that one too.
It is indeed gross, yet it allows to get Debian 3.0 (Woody) to run on a 60-66 MHz god-dammed-to-hell-for-the-rest-of-eternity-until-the-end-of-times, NuBus Mac.
If you can spare a day's work, it [i]can[/] save you the money for a router/firewall.

The 6100/60AV

The first Mac that I purchased. I loved that little machine with its 250meg HD and the AV in/out.
I cringed at how much I spent on extra RAM for it. The 3 8Meg chips of memory were freaking expensive back then.

Now the computer just takes up space in my closet, maybe it will be collectable in 30 more years.

Amazing how times change, isn't it. My last PowerPoint presentation was greater than 48MB.

It's your first machine man! You should put it to good use again. Pick up a G3 upgrade card, which can be had very cheaply these days.

I use my old 7100/66 to play SimCity classic on.

Using it as a router/firewall could be usefull, but the money used on powering an old machine versus powering a dedicated stand alone MODERN product would probably outweigh any benefit.

YMMV

Very easily.

Most auctions I have seen for them have ended around $50 or less.

Unless it's a school that's seriously strapped for cash (like, still using Apple ][ hardware or something), they probably won't want it anymore than you do. The bane of many K-12 IT folks is supporting outdated crap.

grab a G3 upgrade and stick in the largest hard drive you can find. You can then use the machine for a file server/mp3 server, print server, FTP , all sorts of cool things. Those machines are the perfect size to stick in a closet and forget about.
