How important is the memory detaining clip?

Because I just broke one off the mother board of my Dual 1.8. I was opening it to take out the memory stick installed and it went back too far and snapped off. A small piece attached to the socket that seems to keep it in place broke off too. The clip does fit back where it was supposed to go, just not as tight.
So is this something to worry about?

You mean the actual latch that snaps into place when you push a DIMM down?

My feeling is that you'll only encounter problems when trying to eject the module and that as long as it's firmly seated, it'll work but, if you start to get kernel panics, I know what I'd look at first!
Edit: (I'd also advise using the affected pair of slots last)

???? I don't get it and why does it irk you. Unfortunitly the guy broke it off.
As to answer your question, I'm thinking it will be an issue before too long. The memory stick or the mother board will expand and contract with heating and cooling. I'm guessiing it will work its way loose which in that case Kernel Panics will occur.
Sux because that means a new mainboard.

Yeah, sorry about the confusion, I mean the latch that holds the memory down.
Too bad it's on the first pair of slots, and I only have four total. Ugh.

Actually, the clips are more for ease in ejecting the modules than for keeping them in.
Just use the slot and forget about it.

As Louis said, "If you have ask what it is then you'll never understand jazz." :-)
The Rev. A. flat panel iMacs had a ridiculously fragile ram retaining clip... some kind of brittle plastic that when you tried to eject the ram it promptly broke off. Well documented in the iMac forums (fora?).

Thanks for the info, I didn't mean to come off sounding like a jerk.
I used to work in a store selling peecees back in the day. Just when they came out with the sim module a lot of different designs to retain the chip in place were introduced. Unfortunately the design of them led to them braking off. The only solution was a new mobo.
I had not known that first line of iMacs had flimsy retaining clips.
I feel bad for the guy with broken clip - only time will tell now if its needed or not.
Peace
Mike
