My Beige G3 (June 3, 1998)
  • MiniTower
  • Rev A Beige G3
  • 266mhz
  • 768MB RAM
  • Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM
  • Radeon Mac:Edition 32MB DDR
  • OrangeMicro Firewire/USB 1.1
  • Asamta 10/100 Ethernet
  • Zip Drive
Is running jaguar as my web developement server. It runs headless with my Sony 17 200sf Apple-VGA adapter on the internal video (RageII+2MB). I run the following services on it.
  • PHP
  • MySQL
  • SSH
  • AFP
since Marc Lynns packages are no longer supported on Jagaur, I am thinking I should look at putting FreeBSD or something on it so that I can run the latest software:
  • PHP
  • MySQL
  • SSH
  • AFP
  • firewall
  • etc
and also learn unix. I would also want to run Xwindows, X11, etc. also maybe use webadmin to run it all or VNC over SSH. I want it to be as secure as possible along with being able to use AFP so i can connect to it from my MDD. Also it might be good if I could use it to backup my MDD and live server.

MSo should I stick with Jaguar and patch all the apps, or use something like FreeBSD/unix which could be easier to keep up to date with the latest stuff.

You could use XPostFacto to run Panther.

Already tried. running a current OS X is out of the question. It's either Jaguar, or running FreeBSD or something.
