Me and friend of mine lucked out getting some free macs from work. I got a DP450 G4 and he got BW G3 (it is the one with the updated controller chip). I going to help him set it up cuz he's not much a a computer user

Anyway I want to upgrade his machine to Panther. Right now it is currently running 9.1. I have heard that you must upgrade the firmware on these machines before installing Panther or the OS itself could fry the video card/mother board or some thing like that.

Due to some software on the machine ( it was a customer rental machine where I work) it expects to insert credit card when you boot it up. I cant find my OS 9 install Cd from years ago anywhere.

So basically if I boot from a Pather cd will I be able to upgrade the firmware during the installation or do I have to do this while booted into 9.

You dont need any firmware update. Just insert Panther cd, boot from it, and install it.

THe other thing is that it may be good idea to reformat the hard disk before installing (can be done during install) cause it got probably a lot of unneeded stuff.

I concur with Hash. Just boot the Panther CD and install. Panther and Panther Server run fine on my B&W, and I didn't have to do a firmware upgrade.

AL G4/1.5 OS X 10.3
Next computer G5/3.X Ghz OS X 10.x.x
