Hi,

Christmas came early here today. After 10 years using a PowerMac 7500, I now own a Dual 1.8GHZ, 512Megs ,with ATI 9600XT, Bluetooth, Airport.

Booted up fine, even using my old Apple 720 CRT monitor without any major problems.

Ordered it last Saturday night, got it today ( Friday) at 1:45 via FedEx Next Day Air.

Woooo hooo!

Let me join in the congratulatory chorus! I made a similarly huge upgrade - from an 8600/300 and an iBook 466 to a DP 2.0. You'll love your new G5 - they are amazing Macs!

Yeah, Im thrilled. Like a kid at Christmas. Whats really amazing to me so far is how quickly my 4 year old son adapted to the new OS. He was like a pro in no time.

I did the upgrade to 10.3.5 this morning. So far no issues.

Began playing Call of Duty this morning too.....Im overwhelmed!

Ok,just thought I'd post some impressions since I received the new Mac on Friday.

The Mac has been solid from first boot up. Downloaded the 10.3.5 and installed that without any issues. Piece of cake.

Not noisy, fans only kick in once in a while. Even while playing Call of Duty, the fans are pretty quiet. Call of Duty is quite intense and kicking my arse, even on the wussy setting. My first new game in almost 8 years.........lots have changed. My 4 year old son is enjoying his Harry Potter game too.

My first real experience with Mac OSX has been fairly positive. There are some things I find quirky, or odd.

Contextual menus dont pop up when I hold down the mouse button. That baffles me. Also, not being able to customize the clock menu ( different colors, etc) puzzles me too.

Overall, quite positive so far.

Whew!

Markovich:

That's quite a jump to go from a 233 MHz G3 to a dual 1.8 GHz G5, and to make the G5 your first taste of OS X. Hopefully you enjoy it.

On the subject of contextual menus, the easiest thing to do is to get used to either Control-clicking or to get a multi-button mouse - if you don't have one already. My leanings would be either towards the S+ARCK mouse from Microsoft, or the MX510 from Logitech. Both compliment the style of the G5 pretty well.

One thing I'll note is that the click-and-hold technique does work with icons in the dock, though it's not often needed (I usually use either Exposé or Cmd-Tab to switch app windows).
