So I'm almost at the point to buy a dual 1.8 since I need a replacement for my loyal but slow g3 500. But was wondering about one last thing.

I've got a cd collection of 100+ cd's and I was wondering how long it would take a dual 1.8 to rip an average cd (60 minutes) with the stock superdrive and/or external drive. I've been searching my ass off on the web to find a benchmark that can give me a good image of the speeds, but all I can find is converting songs from the hard drive.

Cause if the time is acceptable I want to rip everything myself, if it's too long I may send my cd to a ripservice like ripdigital.com.

Any comments are appreciated.

I have a new DP1.8 and have been ripping my cd collection from the Superdrive. It's been averaging about 18x speed, using iTunes and converting into AAC format at 192 kbps. So I guess that's a little over 3 minutes for a 60 minute CD.

Not a G5, but: I just ripped a 56 minute, 19 track CD to 320k MP3 on my Dual 1.40 G4 and it took 2:21. My rip speed was over 30x at peak, average was around 27-28x.

100 CD's? That wouldn't take that long to do regardless of the cpu. I've done 300+ cd's in a 2 week space spending a few hours a night and thought nothing of it. Of course, I didn't even realize there were ripping services out there.
