A friends iMac blew up today, one minute she was writing an email in Outlook express, the next, the computer crashed, she rebooted and was greeted with a blank screen, not even a flashing question mark/ System folder.
I've tried booting from my iBook using Firewire target disk mode, no go.
I've tried to boot up from a CD (Jaguar install CD, she only has OS9 on her machine, but it's the only CD I have, & she's lost hers), but nothings worked yet.
The CD's either get spat out on bootup (even if I hold down the C key) or simply get stuck in the machine (as techtool pro just has)
Any ideas, is this machine Toast?

Will it boot into Open Firmware? If so I'd try the ol' reset-nvram/reset-all routine. If that gives no joy, I would try pressing the reset button on the motherboard; I've brought a couple of iMacs back to life with this method.

I've managed to get the machine to bring up the OP system picker (to choose which system drive to boot from) but suprise suprise there's no choices.
I've tried reset-all and NVRam in Open Firmware, no change.
i think this is a hardware issue, but I'm not sure if it's just a HD failure or something more serious, what do you think?

Hi,
I once had something similar with my iMac after I replaced the HD - I reseated the IDE connectors on the HD, CD-ROM and motherboard.

This involves opening it but is not that difficult - if you live anywhere near SW18 send me a PM and I'll show you how to do it.
