I have a 1.8 GHz G5 that has the fan problem with 10.3.5. So I put my Panther install CD in to see if I could reinstall Panther.

It won't let me reinstall Panther since there's a newer operating system on the hard drive.

So I click "quit". The computer automatically restarts and boots into the install screen again.

I can't get the CD out (eject doesn't work) and it keeps booting into the install screen - forever.

How do I fix this @#%@#^% thing? There's no manual CD eject button that I can see!

Power down. Hold down the mouse button when you power back up. Let go of the mouse button after the disk ejects.

I should charge more for advice this good.

My wife would have gladly paid for advice last night. I was pretty upset at them for designing such a stupid install screen. No way to quit without restarting!

It wouldn't make sense to quit the installer without restarting. When you run the installer, you actually boot your computer off of the CD. In order to fully stop the installer and return to normal usage, you have to boot off your drive, which requires a restart.

You could charge for the advice if it actually worked. It doesn't. Holding just about any button down doesn't eject the disk.

I can't restart the computer off of the hard drive, there is no option, it automatically boots from the CD ROM. I have NO options, it just restarts automatically from the CD.

Q@#%Q@#^#@$^!QEYQE^W G5, this is absurd! My $2000 G5 is a paperwight!

Okay, solved the problem. A sledgehammer.

Seriously, a wireless mouse doesn't work - only a wired mouse. That advice would have been nice.

Power Down. Find a paperclip. Bend it. Jam it into the emergency release hole. Remove the disk. Power Up.

Or...

Hold down the option key while booting. Select to boot from the Hard DIsk.

Ahh, but I can't find the emergency release hole on my G5 CD ROM. I would have done that first thing had I been able to find it.

Still, problem is solved, thanks to MacNN members.

Ok, I've never seen a G5 in person, all I know is that my G4's combo drive has a hole

Another option is to hold down the command-option-o-f keys on startup. this will put you into open firmware and give you a command line window on startup. Type "eject cd" and it should pop out. Follow that up with "mac-boot" and you should be underway.

On my G5 (Rev A. DP 1.8) you can manualy open the optical drive cover, which reveals a maual release hole in the superdrive.
