Hello all,

I have one of the second generation iMacs with the slot loading drive, and I recently upgraded the hard drive, and would like to add a cooling fan (there is none) somehow since it is running very hot. I wouldn't know where to put it, or how to wire it, since there really is no place for it to begin with. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Chris,
Are you worried that you have put a 7200rpm drive in where you previously had a 5400rpm one? From my experience of putting HDs in my slot-loading iMac - yes they got hot but they never failed - older 7200 rpm drives did produce more heat, but I think more recent ones are more energy efficient.

OK - does not really answer your question, but make sure all the vents are clear above and below to allow the convection of air.

If you really want to install one, you would probably have to mount it near the handle at the top as there is not a lot of space in the case and have it draw the air upwards and out through the vent holes. You could get one which has an inline plug with the HD power connector available form PC parts stores.
