Is there a way to check the integrity of the datastream coming from the optical drive?

TechTool Pro might check that, it tries to test everything.

If you suspect the ribbon cable, replace it with a spare, see if any errors go away.

If you really suspect errors from the drive itself, insert a CD with a complex directory structure. Run DiskWarrior or DFA on it, and save the error report. Repeat several times, see if the error reports are different each time.
