If the new iMac G5 look as good as I think they will, I'm surely going to snap one up.
I do most of my work at my desk (video editing, web surfing, writing). and need a fast machine and nice screen so I don't go blind at home.
But I still sometimes need/want a laptop when I feel like writing in the park or bookstore.
I was leaning toward getting one of my favorite all time macs that I never bought, an ibook clamshell 300 (I like the blueberry/tangerine original style notebooks).
All I would need the laptop for was to use word/final draft/appleworks and get those files back to my desktop (USB).
I think even the 3GB harddrive should hold those programs, but I might need the 6gb.
For writers/filmmakers/apple junkies who live double lives, let me know what you use or would recommend.
I just think it makes a lot more sense to have a g5 desktop and a cheaper laptop for writing, than get stuck in between with a 2800 powerbook that is too much for writing and not as fast as a G5.
And I think an iMac G5 and a laptop would still save me a few hundred as well.
Any thoughts? I'm sure there are.
Happy Monday!

I mix my work between a G5, G4 iBook and G3 iMac and it would be unworkable without one feature: .Mac.
It really has made it seamless to switch betwen all three. I keep my work on my iDisk, so it's always available; my calendar and bookmarks are the same on all three machines thanks to iSync, and my .Mac mail is equally accessible on all three.
If you also have .Mac too, I'd plunge right in.

If the iMac specs blow me away, I might consider doing something similar. I've always preferred the laptops at home for the portability and flexibility.
That said, my PB17 is more of a desktop machine anyway. If the G5 specs/form factor is a must-have, I've thought about selling my 17 for one and then picking up a used/refurb 12 for on-the-go work.

This is exactly what I am doing.
I bought an Aluminum 15" PowerBook in Dec.03. Realized that I really didn't need it. (for so many reasons...).
I sold it on eBay for $2000, bought a Pismo off of Craigslist for $360. Added a combo drive, Airport, 512mb RAM, and 404Gig HD, for $350 more.
I plan to buy an iMac G5, faster, better screen than a PB. Plus I have my Pismo for taking on the road in rare cases, or checking email from the couch. This, in my mind is the best setup.
To be honest, the Aluminum PB's were too nice to take outside the house, to scared to scratch. Plus, with the flury of Pismo sales on Craigslist and eBay. There seems to be a Renaissance of the golden age...

Ahhh, the good old Pismo. Had one of those in Graduate school and loved that thing. Unfortunately (or fortunately) had to get rid of it when I graduated. Got a 17" iMac then last November added a 14" iBook to the family. We're all wireless. I use the iMac in my home office and the iBook in the family room to browse the web whilst watching TV. I don't have .Mac (too expensive) but keep my music updated on both through iPod. Only check email through iMac...

I figured my best choices are either the ibook or a Powerbook G3. I don't remember liking the Powerbook G3 keyboards though. I remember the placement of the keyboard being too much toward the screen and not in the center enough. Am I remembering this correctly?
But I know for sure that the ibook had a great keyboard.
If I do consider a Powerbook G3, is Pismo the way to go?
