Anodized aluminum doesn't rust, so you have nothing to worry about as far as the case is concerned. Most of the components inside the computer wrapped in or made of plastic, which also doesn't rust. Frankly, unless you've got the computer right next to the deck railing where ocean spray will be washing over, I wouldn't worry about rust at all.

I think the salt erosion is worse than rust, but I think it won't affect your mac, as long as you don't use it outdoors...

Not true. I was working on a G5 for someone who lived ~300 feet from the water, and the inside was extremely salt corroded. Screws were bad off, connectors on the board were worse, and the nice shiny aluminum parts were tarnished and had spots on them.

Move away from the beach.

Iron rusts, other metals corrode. (I.e. rust is the name given to the corrosion of iron).

Trust the man... he may have used the wrong word... rust = corrode in this case... but it is STILL very important. I can't tell you how bad it is in my time-share that is on the beach. Most things with aluminum that are INDOORS need replacement on a continual cycle.

I don't care how good your filtration is or if you keep all your windows shut... the air WILL make its way to the aluminum and begin the corrosion process.

As far as preventing it, I am sorry, I have no idea... one suggestion MIGHT be to keep the G5 in a seperate office with a closed door and run one or two of those "Ionic Breeze"-type units to pull particles from the air... BUT... I do not know that it works regarding the removal of the salt from the air.

Good luck, and I feel for you.

I live On the water as well, Beach at Shoreline... and its all too true. The water in the air keeps me closed most of the Summer, but it would help to filter the air in your room . I use a BlueAir 500 from Sweden I replace fiters once every six months for 75. I have two units, One Downstairs so its 300/year but I consisder it a Must. You will need to dust a lot less. It was needed as we have Cats and my wife is alergic, so this helps greatly..

The corrosion is kept at bay by controlling the air in the home, as much as possible. Keep things Dry :-). At the Shore Humidity is a Killer, and its Salt Water so Beware, Control the air in your environment! A Dehumidifier might be needed? Depends how much the WIndows are open/How wet your spot is... Mine Is 'WET' Outside, On Wood, mold grows..so if thats any indication......

Such is Life on the Beach..It has its Price... You have to know that going in.

hope this helps
