I can't believe that design - it's HORRIBLE! Imagine it with cables hanging from the sockets on the back...

Thick bezel round screen looks naff, far too much of the white bit below the screen, white and aluminium in this contecxt looks dreadful.

I'm shocked, it's much worse than I expected.

BRING BACK THE CUBE!!

I don't like the design too much, too. But then again I didn't like the design of the G4 iMac in the beginning and now I find it stunning.

Maybe it will grow on me.

What ?
That big white frontpanel, with the apple-logo on, just looks.... different ?
Maybe when I see it in a shop I will change my mind, but now, i don't like it...

I love it.
I think it does exactly what it sets out to do.. Be a giant-iPod.
I am worried by one thing, though..
Look at http://images.apple.com/imac/gallery...ro20040831.jpg
Bottom Left.

"Copyright Apple 2003 Computer" ?!

How long have they been sitting on this? Waiting for the chips to come in quantity?

I kind of like it. I can say it looks better in-person.

Should ship with a pair of wireless keyboard and mouse.

I think it is ugly. The old design was more elegant. They should have kept it. The new one looks like a sony.

My 1st reaction is I don't love the design either. Not a big fan of all white, I would prefer something else to seperate it from the eMac. But that's what they want I guess. white means consumer.

what I do love is the prices.

1299 for 17, 1.6

1499 for 17, 1.8 w/superdrive

1899 for 20, 1.8

I think that's great.

Taking a wild guess related to previous structures I would say around £1000 -£1100 for the basic one.

Prices are up now, starting at £919. Way too much, the eMac will carry on nicking sales.

Design looks like a Packard Bell to me. And that's quite an insult...

I was a bit worried when I first saw the location of the sockets for cables, it could look untidy.

But I suppose we thread them through the hole in the stand and have a neater view from the front, not very pretty round the back though.

I will be ordering as I'm in need of an upgrade and it's better value than a dual G5 for me.

I will get the 20" model, the screen size will be quite a shock from my 15".

I got the 15" as soon as it came out, so it's due to be replaced.

I'm happy :-)

This new iMac is the bastard child of an illicit love affair between an iPod and a 128k Mac.

In fact thinking about it, the desk will be neater.

I will only have Power, 1 USB and 1 Firewire cable, as I have hubs for both of those. I have Airport for internet and music over Airtunes.

No untidy speaker cables now.

I may still connect the keyboard direct though.

I find the looks pretty nice ... but was never a huge fan of the current (now previous) model: the dome just seemed a bit too inelegant (the display was nice though). This solves that problem, reducing the footprint incredibly. I also have the new 23" cinema, and love the looks (elegant, clean lines, without being "odd" ... so if the new imac has a similar presence, it should look v. good in person). I agree it looks a little Sony-esque, but more like what Sony would like to do, rather than what they ever achieve: cleaner styling, and better build quality.

Wires out the back is a bit of a problem ... I will definite get the "wireless package" (a good deal at only $100 extra including built-in BT module, KB + mouse). I also think lack of FW800 is a bit of a pain. And I expect people will moan about the graphics ... doesn't seem very powerful, but I'm not a gamer, so don't care.

Still undecided, definitely doesn't have the same impact the now old iMac had when i first saw it, i was speechless but i think Apple would have a hard time topping that.

If you go to the UK Apple site there is a sentence that says "Modern living starts at just £919 (UK) or €1,419 (Ireland) including VAT."

I want to know what the 1.8 20" costs because that is pretty damn cheap for a 64bit processor with a 17" wide-screen included. I think their undercutting PC manufactures now because no-one offers those kind of prices for those specs
Soon we'll be out, amid the cold worlds strife,

It's horrible. IMO they are trying for the "Plasma TV" look. Still no upgrade path without a tower. Too bad. I was expecting more.

Only the base price is on the main page, not the 20" which is the one I want.

I wonder why with the Keynote in Europe, the Europe Stores are still not available, looks like we are second best again :-)

I wonder how long delivery will be delayed in Europe due to 'US Demand' ?

I'm waiting for the education pricing.. although I'm not a student any more, my brother is, and so can order it for me.

The wireless package does seem like the way to go though.

Now all I need is an airport express and to wi-fi the rest of my network.

... and thats all for the negatives.

where'd the computer go? rock on.
I do! Like! It! so little. it just appeals to my sense of minimalism. for the past 20 years I have been listening to people call the monitor the computer. they was rite.

We always expect too much.

These are nice machines, good price drops, lower weight, simple design, G5 processor, etc.

With every iMac to date, there have been those who liked the design and those who didn't. This is not an enthusiasts computer, but it is ideal for the intended market.

I like it. The demand will be high, and the price is right. The biggest problem will be getting your hands on one.

Still no UK prices and we can't order yet either.

Maybe this is the way Apple will deliver to the US first, don't let Europe order for a few hours, get a bunch of US order in first.

Then ship in the 'first in, first out' method.

Usually all the stores come back up at the same time, pity about the delay.

I think, with the styling and the obvious linkage to the iPod in terms of appearance and marketing, Apple has the potential to make this into the must have gadget of 2005. Like the iPod. This could be the halo effect they have been talking about.

Now, all they have to do is advertise the bloody thing ! I mean, outside of Mac magazines. In fact, outside of magazines in general. Billboards, TV, busses. That's where most people see things these days.

Seriously, I think the similarity in design to the iPod will have a lot of people going "Oooh ! Look, they make computers now"

It's awesome. An incredible feat of engineering. Cables will be a trivial matter with a wireless keyboard/mouse and one power cord going in the middle of the base. Remember, this thing isn't for power users! It's main focus is for people who want simplicity and elegance. Most people will simply take it out of the box and plug it in without adding any accessories.

I wish it did have a 128 mb video card. 64 mb seem a little small since it is non-upgradable.

Based on the UK base price of £919 using the same conversion rate the other UK Prices should be :-

17" 1.6 - £919
17" 1.8 - £1061
20" 2.0 - £1344

Let's hope

It says that if you open it you found this (in the official site):

The only unknown is: how loud will it be. It's not obvious how to cool this machine, or where the vents/fans are. After all ... if they can fit the G5 in a package like this, what's the big deal with a PowerBook. I want one, but really would like to know more about this.

I like it - very much. And I was one of the ones jonesing for a "pizza box" Mac in the "headless iMac" thread. I guess I got my "pizza box" - just not in the way I expected.

The price, although a great value, is a bit of a barrier for me....three kids, one entering college in a couple of years...every penny counts. it's a tossup right now whether I can afford to upgrade....still thinking through that one.

But I like what they've done.

Wow! What a big bunch of whiners! How loud is it? (Read the specs). It's ugly! (It's a display!). What's next? It's too thick? It's too white?

Seriously, what did you expect? This must be the pizza box mac the spies were reporting.

My question is what about the RAM? It comes with 256MB in ONE dimm slot. Is this G5 crippled so much that only one DIMM slot is required for ram. No dual channel memory? Sure it has another for expansion (thank God!), but even the 1.6GHz G5 PM had 4 slots. How fast will this iMac be compared to the same speed PowerMac?

However, the price is right. For $300 less than the 20" iMac G4 you can get a 20" iMac G5. That's sweet! Apple will sell a ton in the first few months. Hopefully G5 availability will not cripple production schedules.

I think I want one...
