The G5 iMac supports standard VESA mounting, which gives it the possibility to be even more spry than the G4 desklamp iMac. However, I've never looked at VESA mounts.

Where is the best place to get them? What are average prices? And where's something like the G4 desklamp's swivel arm? Or even something a little better with more range of motion?

Personally, I'd like something that could sit on the desk, since I can't drill holes into the wall of my dorm. But wall-mounts that are really cool could be useful for some people, too.

Nobody has any idea?

Should this be posted in the Peripherals or Lounge forum? If so, please feel free to move it.

"VESA Mount" just means it has a standards-compliant set of 4 screw holes spaced either 75mm or 100mm apart. Pretty much any mounting system will work with the iMac once you buy the adapter. VESA is just the standards organization, much like ANSI/ISO etc...

Apple lists the VESA adapter kit (part #M9755G/A) as coming soon. I imagine it will consist of something like a square plate that attaches to the back in place of the stand.

Thanks for the information.

I hope Apple starts making new VESA mounts with crazy arms, hopefully with heavy-enough bases so I don't have to drill holes into my dorm room table.

Are there any mounts now available that work without drilling holes into a desk that are similar to the iMac G4?

Note that you need the VESA mounting kit for the iMac. For some strange reason it is NOT listed in the iMac section of the Apple Store. It's in the Apple Accessories section. Unfortunately, it's not available until October.

As for mounts, I've been looking at this one:

However, that's a Canadian store. I don't know where they sell them in the US.

If you're in Europe this company seems to have much more reasonable prices:
http://www.tek2.com/beyondhifi/acata...rm_Mount_.html

Seems like there is a premium for computer monitor mounts + not for TV mounts.

A link to their plasma/lcd mount section:
http://www.tek2.com/beyondhifi/acata...CD_Mounts.html

If I had an iMac, I'd VESA her up in a second.
Nothing to see, move along.

After doing WAY too much research, I got the Innovative 7500 for my 20". The main consideration was that most of the others wouldn't support the weight (around 24 lbs), and I needed the vertical adjustability. It looks nice with the painted metallic finish, but I was hoping for something that had more of a "brushed" finish like the stock stand. Also, it is HUGE! It looks like it could hold up a truck. You really can't get a good sense of how substantial the arm is from the pictures on the website. Unobtrusive, it is not. Meanwhile, that pesky VESA adapter is still "currently unavailable".

As much as I would love to see my iMac G5 hanging from the wall I would be afraid that the weight would cause the hinges to come out from the studs in the wall. Sometimes things don't get as properly mounted in the studs as one may think and here comes iMac tumbling down. Scary.

Agreed, it could be scary. Unless you know what you are doing, I would advise anyone contemplating this (especially with the 20" model) to consult an architect or structural engineer. There are specifications for how much load you can place on a 2x4, which is why you should use backers (extra bracing inside the wall, typically a single or double stud butted horizontally against adjacent studs) when hanging heavy objects like big mirrors, wall hung sinks, etc. One can also check with the arm manufacturer, who will often have guidelines for wall mounting vs desk or grommet mounting.

In my case I plan to mount the arm inside a cabinet, where it will be attached to a double 3/4" plywood (cabinet grade 13-ply birch) wall (=1.5" thick) with a metal backer plate and four 2" 3/8x16 carriage bolts. She ain't going nowhere

Is the VESA mount out yet? Starting to sound like Vaporware. I'd love to hang a iMac G5 on the wall.

Anyone have any pictures of setups? Someone had a sweet picture of his iMac using a desk mounted arm somewhere here on the forums, but I can't find it. I received my VESA iMac adapter, just need to get a mount and of course the iMac.

Last time I checked the UK was still in Europe. Check my post above, or if you're too lazy look at this site:

I did not drill any holes for this setup:
