The contrast on my screen has boosted drastically and I don’t know why or how to fix it.
The image is blown out looking. All light colors are very bright and any darker colors are black.
I checked the display settings in system preferences and they are fine. Adjusting them doesn’t fix the problem.

Here are some of the specs for the mac I’m using.
I don't know that all of this info is necessary, but I figured I'd include it just in case.
I'm running OSX
Machine Model: iMac
CPU Type: PowerPC 750 (32.2)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 400 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 320 MB
Bus Speed: 100 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.1.9f1

This happened a few days ago. I was using a movie viewing program called VLC.
It seemed to be frozen so I pressed “control, option, period”. I remember hearing a long time ago that doing this might have some effect when you’ve entered commands that isn’t being recognized (in this case I had tried to quite the program). I don’t know if this is true or not, and I’m not sure that this was necessarily the cause of the problem, but as I was angrily hitting these buttons, the screen contrast suddenly changed.

I’ve run Norton utilities disk DR. & Speed Disk, Disk Warrior, an FSCK system check, Permissions verification and flashed the PRAM. No effect

When I first tried to run Norton from the startup disk, it would automatically take me to the open frame startup page (I think that’s what it’s called).

Then I ran Disk Warrior.

After that I was able to start up from the Norton Disk.

As I mentioned above, I ran the utilities and they said that everything was fine.

Here are a few interesting points…….

-The contrast is normal during startup. The desktop comes on and it looks fine. Then a few seconds later right before the files appear on my desktop, the contrast goes up again.

-When I startup from the Norton or Disk Warrior disk, the screen looks normal.

-When I run Disk DR with the Norton Utilities disk as the startup disk, it says that there are no problems. If I run it from my hard drive it detects several “major problems” in the catalog B tree. If anyone thinks this is relevant, I have the report saved and can post it.

Did you try to change the color profile? Go in System Preferences->Displays->Color.

System Preferences -> Universal Access -> Seeing -> "Enhance Contrast": set it to normal.

What happened is that you included the Control key in that key combo you pressed: Command-Option-Control-period is "Increase Contrast".
