CNET article has pic of new iMac with back cover off. But I'd love to see a HUGER one....
http://news.com.com/iMac+G5+in+pictu...07.html?tag=nl
Or at least some details on how easily user-upgradable components are. (No, it doesn't look like the GPU is upgradable, as guessed by almost eveyone.
If you have a better-resolution pic of innards, please provide link?!?

You undo 3 screws that are hidden under the iMac.

Very cool blow-up of the geek porn. Thanks!
I know that's the SuperDrive in the upper left, but I'm now less sure that the HD is at upper right? I wonder if the HD is going to be (safely) owner-replaceable?

Actually, I can't see the GPU on that shot, or the bigger one. HD, Airport, processor, RAM, yes. GPU, no.

Of course the GPU is not upgradeable. Why would anyone even think that? It never has been on any AIO iMac or powerbook!

Thanks, Eriam --- I was wondering where they got those huge jpgs.
I never saw the link on apple page - must be buried. But on that page it says, "For media and analysts only". Are we privileged now or what?

Careful, a statement like that has a habit of coming back when you least expect it. Like when someone with the original iMac tells you about the Voodoo card he installed .........joe

Umm we're analyzing it to death, so I guess that makes us analysts, and we're publishing the heck out of our over analysis, so I guess that makes us media.
I'd say we qualify on both counts.

Some PC laptops now offer upgradable GPUs.

I'm really wondering about that wireless card. It's not the usual mini-PCI, but a PCMCIA-like just like the one used by the old Airports. A *third* Airport standard?? Apple does like their SKU's and their programmed obsolescense...

Without turning off my PB, removing the battery, and take a closer look on the AP card, I believe it's the same card in the new iMac G5 as in the PB. Could be wrong thought.

Hm, that's a good question.
The internal SKU for a BTO airport extreme card for the iMac is different than for a PowerMac or iBook.
I think the card is the same though. Nowhere in the Apple site I found that there are different Airport Extreme cards.

Hmm, can heat generated from the innards eventually affect the lifespan of the LCD lying on top of it? I can just see all these white spots (ala PB) forming after 1yr warranty expires. Guess only time will tell.

Does anyone know whether these iMac G5 internal photos are of the 17" or 20" models? I'd expect the two different screen sizes to have different internal mechanical designs ($).
Maybe the eMac will soon evolve into a similar FP design with a 1.5 GHz G4 plus a 17" (or 15") LCD screen, and perhaps a more rugged tilt stand.
< $800.

I thought the 20" has the internals of the 17" scaled up by 17.64%.

What's that piece of plastic above the airport card over the big perforated grill in the upper-left that looks like a pull tab? or does it just server some other purpose? i guess we won't know until someone buys one and tries pulling on it.

The two posts above actually is the answer to eachother.
The tap is the inflating trigger that makes a 17" turn into a 20". Of course its cut off in the retail version so you canīt make this adjustment yourself with your cheapo 17".
I have already seen hardware hacks that does the same trick. Even instructions to inflate it up to a 23". Of course you risk cracks in the cabinet and unlike CPU hacks you wonīt be able to scale it back.

I assume the gpu is at the top left under the grill with the pull tab?
Wonder if it's soldered onto the main board or not.

that pull tab is for the optical drive. That's the drive itself. Appears that you pop off a couple of screws, release the data cable from the lobo and can remove it.

hmm, of course, the media slot is just to the left of the grill.
the gpu has to be on the other side, then.
