Just noticed that the G4 733 Digital Audio has a L3 cache - does this improve the performance significantly over the G4 533 to make the 733 a better long term investment?

Yes. The L3 cache makes a big difference with PPC 745x chips.

The 733 was a nasty machine in some ways though. Real early revision 7450, and non-dual. I'd go for the dual 533 myself (unfortunately others think as I do, judging by the prices I've seen).
