Some of the early QS machines had a superdrive that extends back too far and interferes with the heat sync on the Giga dual board, makign it impossible to close your machine. They are now aware of this issue and will be using a new heatsync at some point soon.

I got one like this and had to send it back , actually I was going to replace my superdrive, but my giga board was otherwise DOA - it showed no l3 cache like it was suppose to. I did eventualy cancel the order not because of Giga (I still think this is a good board!) but the totaly inflexible and unfriendly reseller (I just asked them to pay the extra ~$12 to send it back to me the same way I sent it to them - 2day). I would not recommend MacGurus as a place to purchase any products. I certainly will not in the future (maybe I should have gotten a clue from the really bad website!)

Yeah the Pioneer DVR103 is a monster. Best solution is to either trash that thing and replace it with a new DVD-RW drive, or if you must stick it outside.. anyone who needs to burn DVD-Rs probably has a faster drive anyway...

I mean heck. The 103 is noisy, slow, crappy at reading/importing stuff, *sigh* i can go on about it. This is just an excuse to ditch mine

No Doubt! It's been fairly reliable, but loud and slowww! I'll replace eventually - actually since I'm waiting on the proc upgrade for now, maybe I'll go ahead and do that!

Maybe we'll get some faster G4's sometime - dual1.5 upgrades would be nice!

Ouch. I wish I had read this a week ago

I just installed the Giga dual 1.33 last night and was up 'til three in the morning trying to figure out how to get my Quicksilver closed

I am loath to send the board back though, since it works perfectly… with the door open. I think I'll use this as an excuse to upgrade my ageing 103 drive. Bit of a shame since it works fine. But then again having to burn 4x DVD-Rs at 1x speed is a real pain.

Can anyone put my mind at rest: will a newer Pioneer drive (e.g. 107) definitely be shorter in length and fit with the Giga board?

Also, if I buy an OEM 107, will that just work in the Mac? Or do I need some kind of Mac-specific version? Will it support iDVD, etc.?

[edit: don't know my serial numbers]

An OEM Pioneer DVR-107D will work fine under OS X and the iApps.

You can get it from NewEgg for $82-shipped with a free 5 pack of DVD-R discs.

And yes, it is shorter than the 103.

Thanks PMM. I figured it was all OK, but there's nothing like getting a bit of reassurance from a friendly neighbourhood mac user before racking up the credit card (again)

I'm in the UK so went with a local supplier; it's a refreshing change buying OEM parts made for the PC market, they are just so much cheaper than Mac parts. One well-known UK supplier was quoting almost three times the price I paid, for a 'Mac-compatible' DVR-107
