Hey all:

I'm finally making the move from an iMac to a refurb dual g5, which I ordered today. I've searched the forum and not really found a good answer to my issue.

The one thing I love most about my iMac is the 17 inch widescreen. The monitors Apple makes are little too pricey for me, so I ask: can anyone recommend a sub-$1K monitor like the one I'm using on the iMac. I can find lots of nicely priced 17 inch LCDs, but I'm keen on another widescreen set up. Thanks for any help on this.

I've just bought a Samsung SM172x - not wide screen, but it's a very, very nice monitor, with DVI and VGA input. It cost me £330UKP, and runs as 1280x1024 on a 17" screen - just right, if you ask me !

I was a little worried about using a non-Apple monitor, because the ones I'd used before (even Samsung ones) didn't have the crispness that I'm used to. Well, I shouldn't have worried because the 172x is brighter, crisper, more colourful and more responsive than either my Powerbook or my iMac 15".

Recommended (I want to get another, for a dual setup).

I should mention that it's silver, so it's a good match for both Powerbooks and Powermacs, and that it comes with a wall mounting plate (and interestingly, you retain the ability to angle the monitor when wall mounted).

I've got an LG screen - LG L1730B.

Nice looking in silver, dv-i and vga inputs [can switch between my mac on dv and pc on vga] and pretty quick response times.

I paid £325, but seen cheaper now, recommend highly.

I use a samsung syncmaster 760v 17" at work connected to my powerbook and although it's a great display, I cant seem to calibrate it to match my Powerbook's display.

Hey folks, thanks for the feedback. In the end, I bought a 20 inch Apple Cinema display from Small Dog for $1K. It was a closeout of the last generation of monitors, and I am very happy with it. I spent about $300 more than I planned to, but I figured I'd have this monitor for a long time, so it was worth spending the big bucks, picking up some Apple quality gear, and getting a bigger screen.
