This afternoon, I received a call from Apple (caller ID: "Apple Computer 916-399-7992") as follows:

Apple: "Hi, I'm calling from Apple Computer - do you have a couple of minutes?"

Me: "Sure"

Apple: "You configured an iMac G5 on our website last Tuesday, but didn't place the order - are you still interested in buying it?"

Me: "Not until it has a graphics card that isn't a bottom-feeder!:

Apple: "What do you mean?"

Me: "It has the same GPU that was outdated a year ago when you put it into the G4 iMac - I'll wait for revision B before buying, and then only if you at least offer a BTO upgrade to a decent card."

Apple: "When will that be?"

Me: (laughing) "Well, you tell me - you're with Apple! I hope it's no later than early January!"

Apple: "Would you buy one then? In 4-6 months?"

Me: "It's up to Apple - I would've bought AT LEAST 2 of them on the day of the Paris Expo - one for me, and another for my son in college, but not with a shite graphics card!"

Apple: "OK then - thanks for your time."
Interesting ..... it was certainly just a marketing drone from Apple, but I was impressed that someone would call to see why a "saved order" wasn't placed! And I'm holding out for revision B .....

They tend to do that frequently, I hear - especially with iBook and PowerBook buyers these days. I held out on a bargain for the 12" PB, but I think they're not going to negotiate with a student buyer who's already getting a significant discount.

Sounds like a great way to give them feedback.

It sounds to me like Apple are trying to get an idea of potential demand for the new iMac, apart from actual orders placed.

Last week I got a call from Apple asking how my PowerBook was. I bought a 17 3 weeks ago. Thought that was a nice touch, especially as I wasn't asked about AppleCare (already have it) or any other sales-related stuff.

Mmm. Must mean there`s secretly something wrong with it, and they want to find out if you`ve found the fault yet.....

I configured a Dual 2.5 with two 30" displays, saved it, and never got a call. Maybe it's because neither are really shipping?

It's not the same graphics chip as the iMac G4s had. That one was the regular 5200, the G5 has the 5200 Ultra with twice the core clock and even higher memory clock. But I think they'll get the point.

The 5200 is a piece of junk regardless in which version.

Just what I'm doing now - not buying one (or two!)

You could hold out for revision D, the iMac G5 Home Theatre system.
