Dual 2.5 on 10.2.8?

Dumb question..but- I have projects this weekend with a new dual 2.5. The some software (imageprint RIP) doesn't run on 10.3x. Is there any reason I can't run of 10.2.8 for the meanwhile? Thanks....Pete

I would think that's a big no-no. 10.3.5+ has the software necessary to control the cooling system - otherwise your G5 may go berserk.

Apple has always made it impossible to install an OS version that is lower than the version that first ships on a computer model.
If a computer came with 10.3.5, it won't be able to install 10.3.0-10.3.4.
So whether it's a no-no or not...it'll never happen without some clever hacking. And like you said, hacking the installer and forcing a 10.2.8 install would probably cause some serious problems to the computer hardware, if the computer even runs at all.

Correct, the minimum MacOS version the machine will run, is what version the machine shipped with. G5 DP2.5's come with 10.3.4 or higher so 10.3.4 is the lowest MacOS the G5 DP2.5 can run. It's always been that way.

Thanks everyone! Thus explains why the first thing I tried, failed. That was to boot up from a bootable 10.2.8 drive. It lets me select it but won't boot from it and defaults to it's 10.3 system. So, if I want to load all my application preferences from my older system, can I just copy them into the 10.3 system under the appropriate user? Thanks again.....Peter

Yes, preferences can be moved over. Shouldn't be any problem.
I generally don't, just so I can lose all the preference files for shareware/freeware/etc apps I've downloaded, run once, and dumped. I like it to be a bit cleaner, if I can. But yes, there should be no problems. Only ones I'd wonder at would be things that have a newer version for Panther. I would check the iApps for these. Still, worst case scenario, it ignores your old prefs and comes up default. It should work fairly well, though.
