i already have a powerbook g4 and my girlfriend is now interested in switching to mac as well. she really likes the imacs. her primary use would be for college, etc. i want her to get the 17inch 1.6 g5, but i havent seen a lot of people buying these. other than the frontside bus speed and the superdrive, does it lack anything else major compared to the other models? bc she wouldnt burn dvds at all, so she doesnt need that. im just wondering if other people have gone with the 1.6ghz imac as well. thanks.

When I bought my first Mac (12" Powerbook), I thought I didn't need a Superdrive either, but eventually I got into the photo and video editing and now I just purchased a 17" Superdrive model. I don't think there's much difference between the 1.6 and 1.8, except the superdrive, faster bus, and faster G5. But then again, those three components, I feel, justify the upgrade. I purchased from Apple Canada and it was only a $250CAN difference. Also, don't forget, as a student she is eligble for student pricing. So have her take advantage of that.

No reason in particular. I guess the biggest is the Superdrive, especially considering it's not available as a BTO and it's only $200 more for 200MHz and Superdrive. If you end up wanting to add a Superdrive later on it'll likely cost you more than $200 if you want it internal (in addition to the labor).
