I recently bought a new dual 2.0ghz G5, and am having an issue where the system occasionally does not wake fully from sleep.

I hit the keyboard to wake it up, the cursor appears (and I can move it around on screen- so it isn't hung), but otherwise the screen remains black and the password sign-in dialog doesn't show. Hitting the power button or other keys does not help (I thought I might be able to force it back to sleep, then wake it again). The only way to solve it is to restart the system using the power button.

I've turned off practically all of the sleep options, in the hopes that would bandage the problem. I've set it to never put the computer to sleep, and turned off harddrive sleep. The display is set to sleep after 3 minutes. None of this helped.

This only happens about 1/10 times that it wakes up, but is very frustrating nonetheless.

Any ideas? I don't have any unusual third party extensions... mouse/keyboard/printer, etc. It has an extra gig of RAM in it, but it isn't exhibiting any other typical "bad RAM" symptoms. I've tried unplugging peripherals, but that doesn't seem to help.

Thanks!

It sounds like you have enabled "Require password to wake computer" in the Security pane of System Preferences and that you're having problems with that setting every so often. Now I don't quite understand what you mean when you say you can move the pointer but the screen remains black otherwise. Even though I have not heard of wake problems with the require password setting, I would disable this setting for the time being. If you need the security of a password prompt at wake, I imagine there are other ways to duplicate that functionality.
