I´m thinking about adding another internal HD to my 2GHz Dual G5, mostly for back-up purposes.

However, will this 2nd HD add more noise - either in the form of noise from the drive itself, and/or more noise from fans because of more heat etc.?

Also, is it possible to spin down/"eject" the second HD when it´s not in use, making it completely idle?

Thanks!

Thanks, but, eh, could you qualify that first "yes"?

Are we talking significant increase? Is it very drive-dependent? Any hints about which drive I should buy (160GB?)?

not a ton louder but you are asking about a subjective thing so...

anyway, you can hear the read/write as the heads move over the platters etc...

As for fan noise no not a lot louder (here at least) slight increase
in that zones temp but not enough to really kick in the fans.

as for drives. I like maxtor but seagate and WD are good too.
Go to following link and read the the customer reviews as go by that.

I added a second drive, a nice Western Digital 120 to my G5 1.8 dual, and I don't hear any noticeable difference, nor do the fans come on any more than they did. Honestly, if it weren't for the icon on the desktop, I wouldn't know it was there.

like I said it is a subjective thing. Me I hear all drives in G5 when the heads
move around a lot. Fan noise i never hear because that noise for me
is soothing, not annoying

glad you got something that is good for you.
