I went to the Apple Soho store last night, and there was a nice crowd around the 17inch iMac G5. The 20inch display model was convenietly located in the window, so no one could compare the 17inch to the 20inch side by side. So that stinks. But what I saw of the 20inch back, it was really big.
Anyway, after waiting for weeks to see it, I waited 20 minutes in line to play with it. It was a great machine, looked as advertised and such. Solid machine that no PC could touch. But I'm gettting spoiled as an apple customer. Maybe it's the fact that I along, with many other people on this forum predicted before it even came out that it would look pretty much like the new apple display with the computer built in. So with the surprise gone, I think my joy of the machine is gone. The "fun" factor doesnt' hold up, at least on 1st viewing.
When I saw the 1st G3 233 iMac I went crazy. I was just getting into Macs and that blew me away. I loved that thing. I know 10 million people felt the same way.
I think the iMac's kept getting better and better looking too. Slot loading Snow was the one I eventually got.
And I thought the G4 sunflower was the coolest computer I even saw, maybe next to the cube. It's just so great and I never saw that coming. Knew they wanted to do a flat display LCD, but still didn't see that design coming.
So now with the Imac G5, it's a great price, it looks cool, but it's missing the "it' factor for me. After 6 years of iMac's I'm just not excited by it after spending time playing with it for 10 minutes or so.
I dont' mean to be a "debbie downer" or anything like that. Still a solid machine for anyone that wants one. But I might just get a G5 tower. I've always been about the "i" line of mac products since they came out, but now I think this current version of the iMac doesn't make me playful enough to pass up power for fun.
If they added iPod Mini color to it, oh boy.
What do you think?

Saw one up here in Vancouver; likewise, while it's a beautiful machine, it wasn't as eyeball-popping as the last generation.
One thing that doesn't really come across in pictures is acrylic layer around the iMac which reminds me of the 1G/2G iPods with sharp corners. It's a much thicker layer of clear plastic relative to the 3G iPods and it takes a bit of getting used as I was expecting the matte finish of the dome. I guess that's how they prevent it from getting all dirty...
Also, the thing does run quiet although I was in a showroom so it's really hard to tell but it was quite warm to the touch along the slit on the back where the air is venting enough to make me wonder how hot it might get in the middle of summer under heavy use.

I think it would look 10 times cooler and would probably run about 10 times cooler (well maybe not that much) if the removed the stupid chin and put the power brick on the chord on the out side.

That's the reason why I raided into the local Apple retailer and ordered the 20" Sunflower after I saw the iMacG5 pictures. In my opinion, it is just a cheap PC in white enclosure and the idea of putting all the components behind the LCD screen is not new, since lots of PC company had the kinda design. Sunflower iMac is such a unique Mac and this is what the new iMacG5 is lacking. I love my iMacG4 so much, this is the masterpiece of computer styling.

yeah .. that would make it look 10x cooler .. i'd **** my pants for a Apple cinema display in white, with a computer hidden inside...
and even if the panel isnt as high quality (which is up to debate as people are trying to figure out the ms of the panels) it'd look hot as hell.. the chin kinda killed it a little bit for me.. still sweet though

Look at the footprint, the clean lines, the stunning displays, and the excellent performance. The new iMacs are great computers, and I think they will do quite well.

I got to see the 20inch iMac G5 in a less crowded Manhattan Store and I like it 100% more than the 1st time I saw the 17inch. I think the 20inch is much more impressive.
The screen looked INCREDIBLE and the design got my eye much more.
It's still not as SHOCKING or WHAT IS THAT as the 1st two G procressors were, but it's still impressive on second look and in the 20inch size.
I guess I'll have to give it another consideration when I purchase a desktop in the next month or two.

The reason why you and everyone else went crazy over the first iMac G3 233 was because it was the first and only consumer computer that looked different than anything else. We have all been used to beige desktops that looked like they belonged inside a stuffy old office. The iMac G3 has color, shape, and it was the begining of a change in the way the home computer was going to look.
Although computer companies have paid more attention to detail, Apple has always stayed ahead of the game. Everything they make looks light years ahead.
Just like you said, you have gotten spoiled by Apple's designs just like the rest of us so when they make something new the fan fare will seem low but take a few more looks at the iMac G5 and you will change your mind and your eyes will see a better vision in due time.
Have you seen Gateways monstrocity of an AIO? UGLY!

Yeah, it's not the best machine around that's for sure, it's quite a bit more expensive and not as powerful as the G5 iMac, the Sony AIO is about as bad, of course, they have other machines, but the Sonys imo tend to be too expensive, I wouldn't spend $1300 on a Windows PC no matter the brand.
Most reviewers have liked the G5 iMac alot--Wall Street journal, PC Magazine, the AP, Time Magazine, NYT, all have pretty rave reviews.

Hi,
I rarely post here, but I thought that I would give my $.02. I have always been a powerbook user, I did own one G4 desktop briefly. Well I finally live in a place where I have my own office, and I wanted to have a bigger screen than I have on my 15" Powerbook. So I was debating between getting the 20" ACD or the 20" iMac. After seeing the 20" iMac I just had to have it. The screen is stunning. The "chin" on the 20" is not all that bad. So for about $600 more than the cinema display I have a G5 that is a lot faster than my powerbook, I will never give up on my powerbook, but it will be getting a lot less use now...
