I can get one of these for free through work and I have a G5 at home with an NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra 64MB in it. Would I see any gain in putting in my computer? I mostly do general computer usage things (web, writing, iApps, and some DVD Studio Pro work). I have done a little searching for info but I haven't really turned up any good info.

Your G5 has an AGP card built-in...as far as I know, quartz extreme will not support a PCI card. You could use it to send signal to a secondary or tertiary monitor, I guess. However, I would not consider a PCI card to replace an AGP.

Your primary video card SHOULD be in the AGP slot. AGP 8x has a huge amount more bandwidth than PCI, and Quartz Extreme only works with AGP graphics cards. Not only that, but your FX5200, though fairly slow, is still faster than a Radeon 9200.

PCI video cards are pretty much only for driving a second monitor. If you were to get one, you could have up to FOUR monitors on your G5 - two on the built-in video card and two on the PCI video card. If you just want faster performance, you should look into a Radeon 9800 instead. However, it'll really only help for graphically intensive stuff, like Motion or gaming.

if its free you might as well take it in case you want to have more displays and you could always sell it.

I wound up tossing it in an old B&W G3 w/ a Sonnet 1GHz G4 processor upgrade. I'll see how that works. It really sucks that it slows the bus to 66MHz.

Yeah, that's why you get a 1.1 GHz G3 upgrade instead . Cheaper too.

Well, enable PCI Extreme and you should be golden.

not my choice. i use what is given to me through work. it seems odd to me that sonnet would even sell something like that.

I do seem to recall that when it first came out, they tried to keep it real quiet and didn't mention it at all. But of course it didn't take long for someone to figure it out, at which point they put a short little thing about how it wasn't important, or something like that. That's awesome you got all that stuff through your work, the Sonnet may not be the best performance for your money but it must still be pretty good.

i am in need of a laptop and i figured i would post this here first. would anybody be interested in some sort of a trade for the B&W machine?
I can upgrade it with:

Sonnet 1GHz G4 processor upgrade
Radeon 9200 128MB PCI
512MB RAM
40GB HD (Maxtor 7200 RPM)
combo drive pulled from an eMac
