What DVD-R drive is in the iMac G5?
Does anyone know? If one were to purchase the Combo and want to upgrade to a DVD-R, I want to know if it is a notebook type drive or a regular drive.

It's a Panasonic UJ-825-B. You can find they at new egg They are the only company that manufactures slot loading drives anymore. You'll have to do a firmware update to get it to work. Personally, I'd just swing for the 1.8, it'll be less of a hastle in the end.

It is highly unlikely that a firmware update would be necessary (as in, I'm 99.999% sure it'd just work).

From a customer review on new egg.
"This drive is great. I got it for my 12" powerbook. I had to install new firmware to make it compatible with it but other than that smooth installation. It burns dvd's fast. Burning cd's is a little slower than it was with the combo drive but for the price it was well worth it. I would recomend this drive for pc laptops as well. The slot loading is awesome."

Would you believe someone who posts some review on NewEgg. Or an Admin with six thousand plus posts? Gotta give Tooki more props than that...
I bought the Panasonic Combo Slot slim drive from NewEgg. Slid it into my Pismo, it's OEM out of the box. Burns, boots and reads natively. No nada need be done.

Thanks. I didn't know if it was a notebook drive or a regular 5.25" drive. It looks like that one from Panasonic can write DVD-RAM for those that who care.
I was thinking about getting the iMac G5 17" without the optical drive, and install the combo for myself.
$1,099 + 135 = 1,234 for an iMac G5 with SuperDrive
